William FRICKER of Wingfield
« on: Monday 31 January 11 12:30 GMT (UK) »
I have recently traced a family line back to WILLIAM FRICKER who raised his family at WINGFIELD, Wiltshire. He and his wife MARGARET (aka MARGATT, MARGETT) had the following children baptised there between 1761 and 1780: James 1761, Rebecca 1762, Phillip 1765, Mark 1767, Elizabeth 1769, Thomas 1771, Thomas 1775, Anna Sophia 1776 and William 1780.
I have been unsuccessful in finding the marriage of WILLIAM & MARGATT and in identifying the baptism and hence parents of WILLIAM FRICKER. [A William was baptised in Wingfield in 1743, the son of William Fricker, but I am not yet convinced that he is the William who married Margatt].

If anyone can help I'd be very grateful.

Hi to you,I am not sure i can help you directly.Having researched the FREEGARD name for many years and it appears that in 1700s and earlier that the name was spelt variously FRIGARD,FRICKARD ,FRIGAR,FRICKER.
Extracts from THE NIMROD INDEX list several Fricker marriages and baptisms. These are the ones that may be of interest
William Fricker to[no entry] at   Chilmark 15th February 1696/7
William Fricker to Mary Best at  Fonthill Gifford 4th dec 1698
William Fricker of Bridstone ?to Ann Lewis [this parish]Broughton Gifford 21 Apr 1701
Francis Dau  Wm + Chath Frigard  24th Dec 1721 [baptism]
Mary     Dau  Will and Chatharine Frigard bapt Jan ye 19th 1724

I am afraid that is all i know but it may give you an idea of other possible parishes to search

      Good Luck and Good Hunting

Thanks Harvo
I haven't met the various spellings that you quote and will repeat some searches using them. So far all my ancestors have been spelled FRICKER but I have heard of another variant - FRICAR. Also, I have discovered FRICKERs in Mere and further east in Wiltshire but I haven't found any connection between them and my FRICKERs. In the period I am interested in my FRICKERS are mainly from Wingfield and Rode with some connection to Bradford on Avon. They seem to reside in an area bounded by Bradford on Avon, Trowbridge and Frome.
I think if I can find the marriage of WILLIAM FRICKER and MARGATT sometime shortly before 1761 then I stand a chance of determining William's ancestry.

Slightly side-tracking.. are you aware there is a copy of the Will for William Fricker of Wingfield, Wiltshire available ?  dtd 1795, proved 1798.
I appreciate that it doesn't help with a marriage date for William & Margaret, but thought it may be of interest to you. In it William bequeaths 'all that Cottage Garden and Smiths shop' to his beloved wife Margaret. He goes on to mention his eldest son James, his children Rebecca, Elizabeth, Sophia Ann and William. William signs his mark x . Witnesses Geo. Hawkins, Wm Love and John Wheeler.

Thank you Captain
This is definitely the correct William and his family and is most interesting. Can you please tell me where I can view/obtain a copy of this will?
Thanks again

Hi rogden, I am also studying the Wiltshire Frickers and though I don't recognise any of the names you have posted, you might recognise the ones I have posted on this same board.
If there appears to be a connect,I would be very pleased to hear from you.
harvo talked about variations of the spelling of "Fricker" and I have come across one that is definately my Gt.Gt.Gt. Grandfather He was with the 2nd battallion,5th Foot and fought at Basaco,Portugal in 1810 under Wellington. When he was awarded the Busaco clasp to the GSM, his name was spelt " Freeker". He was George Fricker from East Knoyle,Wiltshire.
His father was Thomas, and he married a Mary Thompson in St. Marys, Scilly Isles.
I have quite a lot of information on that branch of Frickers I am happy to share should any of this, and what is in my postings prove relevant to your search.
Happy hunting !
Cheers,
phipps

hello Phipps
My earliest known Frickers originate in Wingfield, Wilts in the 1730s. My direct ancestor William Fricker (son of William & Margatt) moved to the neighbouring parish of Rode, Somerset about 1805. His son, another William, Married in Rode in 1823 and had children born in Bradford on Avon, Frome and London. Interestingly he was living in the Channel Islands  in 1861 as was your ancestor. Mine was in Alderney. My Frickers were plumber/glaziers.
So far I haven't found any connection between my Frickers and those living further east in Mere, East Knoyle, etc.
If you would like to know more please get in touch again.
