Eliza Daynes
« on: Thursday 09 January 14 17:22 GMT (UK) »
Whilst having a stroll through Wymondham Abbey graveyard today I came across a headstone for Eliza Daynes daughter of John & Jane Daynes. It says she was killed on the Great Eastern railway at Kettringham February 6th 1879 aged 14. I wondered if any Rootschatters had any further information surrounding the circumstances of this young girls tragic death.

Hi Tioman
Here's her burial in Wymondham PR
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0xjq/

The note on the side says 'By Coroners Order'  so looks like there will be a Coroners report somewhere.

Hello, I see you live in the lovely town of Wymondham, my late hubbys family came from the town
the LONGS,   families I am tracing, from 1900+ the family lived at the Lizard, and some members worked on the railway, around Norwich, would you consider visiting the cemetary,  when the weather
improves, to locate any headstones, the family may have had,????very many thanks.Margaret Long.

Hi
I, and I expect some others, was intrigued. A sad story.

EDP Friday February 7 1879 page 3
Fatal Railway Accident at Wymondham
A shocking and fatal accident occurred yesterday afternoon at the railway near Wymondham, to a girl named Eliza Daynes, aged about fourteen years.  It appears that the unfortunate girl had been on a visit to her sister, who lives in one of the railway cottages at Ketteringham, abutting on the line, and was returning home to Wymondham by the railway. When about two miles from the Wymondham station, the 3.10pm train from Norwich approached, and the poor girl was knocked down, her body being horribly mutilated.  It now lies at the Railway Hotel, Wymondham, awaiting an inquest.

yokel
