Rule/Anderson families
« on: Tuesday 01 February 11 22:45 GMT (UK) »
I'm relatively new to genealogy, 2 years. I am trying to trace my roots after learning that "Baker" is the surname of my step great grandfather. The blood line is Rule/Drewry. With much help & luck I have traced Drewry back to Drewry/Guest In Stourbridge, England.
Phoebe Anne Drewry married James Rule who was born in Glasgow. I was given the following by a RootChat member.

John Rule 34, Engine Worker, b. Dumfries
Margaret Anderson Rule 32 b. Dumfries
James Rule 8 b. Glasgow
John Rule 6 b. Glasgow
George Rule 4 b. Glasgow

Address: 2 Sister Street, Calton Glasgow

Is there anyone who might be a descentant or know of someone who is? Please contact me at (*). Thanks

Best regards Pete

Hello

I'm not a decendant.  However. the official govt website is www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk free to register and search, but ppv for dowload.  £6.00 buys 30 credits which allows for the download of up to 5 bmds/copies of census records.

I did a search there 1835 to 1855 and found three children born to John Rule and Margaret Andeson.

1 18/10/1846 RULE GEORGE JOHN RULE/MARGARET ANDERSON FR3391 CHILD 3 M BARONY GLASGOW CITY CITY/LANARK 622/00 0130 0057
2 01/02/1843 RULE JAMES JOHN RULE/MARGARET ANDERSON FR5582 M GLASGOW GLASGOW CITY CITY/LANARK 644/01 0360 0502
3 07/09/1844 RULE JOHN JOHN RULE/MARGARET ANDERSON FR3211 CHILD 2 M BARONY GLASGOW CITY CITY/LANARK 622/00 0120 0242

I've looked and can find no marriage for the couple.  This is not uncommon before the start of National Registration ibn 1855.

The next step is to look for a death date for margaret Rule (Anderrson - as this should give her parents names and mothers maiden name - and also indicate if John was still alive.

Regards,   Steve  :)

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the info. This is all new data for my records.

Sorry for the "Cut & Paste" below. I had just finish with this note in resonse to a PM. It seems appropriate as a reply to you.

The entry you posted is indeed the family that I am looking for. I have both the 1851 & 1861 census listings that you found. I am looking for the family trees for the parents John Rule and Margaret Anderson Rule, marriage & death notices etc., basically anything that can be uncovered on this Rule family in Glasgow.

I am relatively new to genealogy. I recently learned that my surname "Baker" if from a step great grandfather. My biological great grandfather was James Rule. He evidentally moved to Stourbridge, England and became an iron worker. He married a Phoebe Anne Drewry in 1869 in a civil ceremony. They had two sons, Philip Anderson Rule and Archibald Guest Rule, my grandfather. From this point on everything gets fuzzy.

Phoebe and Archibald emigrated to the US in 1887. Philip stayed in the UK living with his grandmother Anne Drewry Guest and aunt Mary Ann Drewry. Philip emigrated to the US joining his mother, brother and stepfather James Wilson Baker in Weare, NH. Apparently some time in the time between the mid 1880's and his death James Rule became a homeless person. This is not confirmed. There are admission & discharge entries at a Workhouse in Dudley. There doesn't seem to be a death record.

Any help greatly appreciated
!

best regards,

Pete
