Diogenes MacIntyre in South Uist, Outer Hebrides, Scotland ??
« on: Friday 21 February 14 22:17 GMT (UK) »
I have found a transcribed entry from the parish records (South Uist) with the forename Diogenes with surname MacIntyre !!!  ???  ::)  :P   ;D

On a separate page, different date there is another entry with the father (a different person altogether) named as Diogenes  ???

However, what I’m curious about is the fact that in later census records, both are known as Hugh/Ewen which bears no resemblance to the name Diogenes.

As it happens, the surnames are both the same so a possible family connection but it is the only 2 out of all the Hugh/Ewen’s from 1820 – 1855 to be written as Diogenes  ???

Can anyone enlighten me as to what the reason is & why Diogenes ?

If it had been Scandinavian, I would have understood but…………a Greek name  :o has me totally baffled  ;D

Very Curious,

Anne Marie 

Hi Anne Marie,
Very strange, Greek philosophers on South Uist.
Maybe the parents were Sherlock Holmes fans - The Diogenes Club was a fictional Gentlemans Club in some of Conan Doyle's stories ;D ;D

But being serious now - have you checked the original or is this from transcriptions?
My first thought is a Gaelic name mistranscribed .

Looby :)

A relative of mine, born in 1790 in Turriff, Aberdeeenshire, was named Diogenes Duncan. If you put "Diogenes" into the search facility in Family Search, 21 other people of the name appear. Most are from the highlands/islands.

Thanks folks,

Much appreciated & Looby, great find which answers my question on the historics side.

I did PM Seoras y/day & most of the ones he found were Inverness County areas I think.

GR, the Duncan would be a close match on initial but don't see any Duncan's as descendants  ::)

Put it this way, if they'd kept with the name Diogenes they would have been easier to trace  ;D

Looby, they are transcriptions 1846 & 1847

Regards,

Anne Marie
