Charles Jackson, Whttington Staffordshire.
« on: Thursday 31 July 14 20:30 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for information on Charles Jackson and his wife, whose name I unfortunately I don't know. All I know about them is that in the late 1870's they were living in or around Whittington in Staffordshire and were possibly from that area. My interest in them is that in about 1879 Mrs Jackson found a baby abandoned on the steps of Whittington Methodist Church and took her in. My Great Grandmother Ann Mary (Annie) Tranter (nee Jackson) was the baby they raised and I'd really like to find out anything I can about them. One more thing that I do know is that by the time Ann Mary married in November 1903 is that Charles Jackson was deceased. We are aware that her Mother disapproved of the marriage because the Tranter family ran a public house and her Mother was a member of a Temperence society. If anyone can help despite there being so little information or if someone has a connection to this Jackson family I'd appreciate any information they could give.

Hi there

Where did Annie marry in 1903, and what was her address?  Any Jackson witnesses?

Have you tried to find Annie with the Jacksons in the censuses 1881-1901?

Annie married in Coleshill in 1903, she was living in Lea Marston at the time of her wedding. There are no Jackson witnesses at the wedding, the witnesses names were William Charles Caldicott and Amelia Dolman. I have found Annie in the 1901 and 1891 census's but she was working as a servant and a cook. I can't find her in the 1881 census at all.

1901 mary Jackson is living in Lea Marston. says married, but Charles is not at home.

There's a Mary Hunt and Charles Jackson on the same page for a marriage in 1877 in Lichfield district. There is a Mary Hunt b Whttington c1853 on the censuses, daughter of Joseph and Penelope. She appears to have a couple of sisters around her age (and brothers), including an Ann, so quite possibly Annie was named for them. The "found on a doorstep" story may be to hide illegitimacy and the family connection

Ann Mary Hunt

It's worth following that one up Mabel.
Possible birth reg
Ann Mary Hunt
Sept Q 1879
Lichfield (Whittington is part of this reg. district)
6b 441

Maybe she was informally adopted by the Jacksons when Hunt family/friends couldn't look after her, the story of her being found on the church steps could have been easier to tell her than admitting they knew who gave her up - just a thought  :-\

Looks promising :)

Just in case it becomes relevant, a Mary Eliza Hunt died aged 33 in Lichfield district, Mar qtr 1881.

She may of course be entirely unconnected.
