I grew up int the area and it's very unlikely that Llanrhyd/Ruthin would be confused with Corwen.

Me thinks Kevin is just being a wee bit  awkward  ::)

Leave it to the locals, Kevin  :(

For goodness sake, lighten up!

OP mentioned Corwen.
I never said it could be confused with Llanrhydd.
All I did was to point out that there is indeed a Corwen in a different county, and it's relatively close to Llanrhydd.

And, in any case, GenUKI says:
CORWEN, a parish and market town partly in the hundred of Edernion, in the county of Merioneth, and partly in the hundred of Isaled, in the county of Denbigh, North Wales

So isn't it possible that he came from a rural area that was in, or close to, both parishes?
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Thanks for your reply both!

I suppose it could be possible that he was born in Llanrhydd, but later moved to Corwen?

Gadget, I seem to remember you have a copy of the nonconformist records for Corwen (?), if you do could you see if there's a Margaret Jones born around 1826 (d/o Thomas & Margaret), and any details?

I notice also that familysearch has one in Ruthin (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X1T5-RSQ) too that is possible! This is useful as the same census (and future ones) all have his daughter born as Corwen too!

Many thanks to all for replies!

A possible record in Corwen parish? https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X1RT-Q5S

His wife was Irish (Williams/Evans not really Irish names!) and he lived in Chester ca.1815-1820, in Corwen in 1820/30s then back in Chester 1841 - the reason behind this I don't really know.

Will check them out tomorrow - the non-c records are on my desktop and it's off (only works 9-5  ;D  )

There are a few parishes between Ruthin /Llanrhyd and Corwen, so will check the ones I have (Gwyddelwern and Llanelidan)  - Derwen, I don't have but I think Heather/hiraeth has those records.  Also,  Clocaenog - my ancestors were buried there but don't have the records.

will report back.

Just to add to the above: a likely candidate would be a shoemaker with some connection to Chester/wife with irish sounding surname!
