The Manchester Regiment were there in 1939/40 and it was the training barracks for the Manchester Regiment Machine Gun Training Centre in September 1939.
The regimental band played at the dances held there on weekends.

Google Ladysmith Barracks Ashton under Lyne.

All interesting stuff but nothing to go on for the search of your man.

Unfortunately the WW2 records havent been released yet to the general public and wont be for some years because there are still some veterans who are alive.  I hope they stay alive for many more years mind you  ;)

You may be on to something, his Army No. is from the Batch allocated to The Manchester Regiment.

It means he would have joined the Army and started his service in the Manchester Regiment. He may however could have been posted to another regiment or served with one or more than one battalion of the Manchester Regiment.

The only way you'll know for sure is by obtaining a copy of his service records from the MoD.
