Title: Violet May Gumbrecht daughter of Frederick William Young in Battersea
Post by: Alberbury on Friday 14 September 12 17:54 BST (UK)
I am having difficulty finding Violet May Young's father Frederick William Young. I think she was an illegitimate daughter of Frederick and Amelia Jane Young, the daughter of James george Young, Shoemaker and Amelia Allen.
Also, cannot find Violet's birth certificate or baptism record.

This looks like Violet?

Births, March qtr 1884
Wandsworth district (which covers Battersea)    vol 1d, page 613

Young, Violet May I

There is also a birth for a Violet May Young,  September qrtr 1883, St Saviour (Southwark)

Also, bear in mind, that the mention of a father on the marriage certificate may only be an invention for propriety's sake?

This one may turn up in Putney (Wandsworth RD) in 1891 with parents Henry and Jemima (Violet's middle initial could be an old-fashioned I or a J): RG12/452/135/33.

Hi,

Have you looked for Amelia Jane Young in the 1881 census?

She would have been @21, and probably in service somewhere.  Frederick William Young may have been in service or living in the same area.

However I tend to agree with KGarrad that Frederick William is probably fictious.

Interesting that as a child and teen she was known as Coates, but married as Young.

Hi,

Per your previous post.  In the 1891 census:
Jane Young        lodger  single  31  Dom. House Keeper  Lambeth

That would make Jane @21 in 1881.   The family you list would seem not to be the correct family as their Jane Young is 12 years old.

In the 1901 census Violet May Young has become:

Violet Coates      dau   17  Battersea       ( I do not think she is Thomas's daughter

But in 1905 her name reverts to Violet May Young on her marriage certificate.  Just seemed interesting.

As we have been telling you, Frederick William Young is probably made up!
He never existed!
Many people, who were illegitimate, made up the name of a father, so that they appeared to be "respectable" at their wedding.

Jennifer C, you have been busy.

George Young's occupation had been a problem for quite some time. Now I know it could help me find more about George.
I have some of the other information you have sent from my local archives, but I did miss a few details.
Thank you.

I have the following information from FreeBMD.

Death   Mar q 1951
HARDIE  Violet M  68  Poole   6a 813

Death  Sep q  1956
HARDIE   Lancelot   70  Bournemouth  6b  136

The Violet above I think is Violet May Gumbrecht, formerley Young. Violet died in Blandford Forum.

I cannot seem to find a marriage on FreeBMD. I just wonder if they married in Scotland, as Lancelot was from Brechin.

A quick search on the British Newspapers archive finds a story from the Evening Telegraph (listed as being from Angus, Scotland) of Friday 20 April 1923 regarding Violet May having a spot of bother with the law. as I have no sub i can;t see what the issue was, but can say this was the mother as I see "wife of an Alsatian chef"  as well as "Westminster Magistrate" identifying the location of the case, despite the newspaper
