Wellington, Derbyshire
« on: Saturday 24 February 07 11:18 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone confirm for me where Wellington, Derbyshire might be? I can't find it on the maps and it doesn't seem to show up as a parish either. It's on my g-g-g grandfather's army record as his birthplace. I thought it might be a mistake, except by googling on the web I've found someone else with a birthplace of Wellington, Derbyshire, so I suppose it must exist.

Any help much appreciated.

Hi Brian
Willington
Looking at a modern map its about 7.2 miles south west of Derby. Just off the A38 between Derby and Burton- On- Trent.

Thanks chaps - I'll try that. If it's the one he should show up in parish records.

Almost certainly Willington I'd say.

My g-grandmother gives her place of birth on 1911 census as Whelington Moor, Derbyshire. She was illiteate, so the spelling is very suspect. On her marriage certificate she is recorded as being born in Heath, Derbyshire. Can anyone throw light on where "Whelington Moor" might be? Thanks.
