Hi Dathai

Thank you for the information. I thought they may have just used the plot because the lease expired. Ill look into whether there are any connections.

I found the Griffiths valuation but havent been able to find who Catherine is. She rented one of her houses/rooms. Given the small number of McGavestons she would have to be in some way related.

There's a death in 1888 in Dublin of a Catherine Gaveston aged 85;  and in the 1861 census for Marsh Lane in the Linacre area north of Liverpool, there is a Catherine Gaveston from Ireland, 61, widow, Proprietor of Houses, listed as a visitor in the house of William G Sandys, solicitor.

ShaunJ- Thanks for the info. I wonder if she is a daughter of Nicholas McGaveston 1767-1823. If her brother John Wynn McGavestons left property to his wife and sons perhaps she managed it.

It seems strange that John Wynn McGavestons widow - Margaret Page left Ireland for New Zealand when she was adequately provided for with a house and pension from her husband.

Unless of course Margaret didnt get either the property or money owed to her.

Re the death certificate:

Do you mean from this site?: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Not so easy to navigate.

That's the GRO in England (for English and Welsh certificates). Says right at the top "The General Register Office is part of Her Majesty's Passport Office and oversees civil registration in England and Wales."

See here for ordering certificate from Ireland-

Very interesting. So perhaps family friends or very close business associates to share a grave and name one of the friends as executor of his estate.

I think by this time of that century most of the McGavestons had left Ireland - some moving to New Zealand and some to the USA.

So it looks like the McGavestons moved to Dublin Ireland at some point and spent about 100 years there before the name becomes fairly obscured. Still not sure of its origins or if this makes them Irish?
