Irish Civil registration marriage index
« on: Wednesday 30 July 14 12:05 BST (UK) »
I was checking the civil registration index for the marriage of my great aunt so that I can send for the certificate, when I discovered there are two references for them, both in the same distict and quarter but different pages.
They are Rose Kathleen Eltham and George Paul Mackenzie, married in Limerick district in quarter 4 1895.
They appear on both pages 191 and 185 of volume 5.

There is no other duplication between these two pages. Both the pages have the expected 8 people (4 males and 4 females).

Has anyone any idea why this should be. Could the marriage really have been registered twice.

I don't know where the marriage actually took place - church / Registry office??. George was born in Ireland of Scottish parents the family was Presbyterian, Rose was English and C of E.

Found it, not quite the same, there was a 3 year gap in the two entries http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=690909.0

Sometimes there are transcription mistakes with the reference numbers. If you are going to order a copy of the certificate, put the information in a note on your application, and ask if GRO Roscommon can explain the apparent duplicate entries. (There’s probably only the one marriage).

I have ordered a lot of certificates from them and they are good at explaining these things. Usually you get a little with compliments slip with the explanation scribbled on the back.

Thank you both. I was thinking it must be the same marriage but somehow recorded twice.

It happened to me too, with a birth registration - I received one certificate with a note saying that one reference was a duplicate of the other.
