McQuade of County Meath Ireland
« on: Saturday 01 August 09 00:09 BST (UK) »
Help needed to find my grandmothers family. Thomas McQuade farmer and Elizabeth Bell from Killnean Westmeath. This information is on Elizabeth, my grandmothers marriage certificate in 1890 when she married here in Australia.  Elizabeth left Ireland with her sister Alice and sailed on the Anglo Indian in 1883 for Brisbane, Qld, Australia.  Can someone help me please.

do you know Elizabeth's approximate year of birth ?

Full Civil Registration began in Ireland in 1864, so if she was born after that started you should find her in the Civil BMD registers.  Familysearch have an online index to these available at : http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#c=1408347;p=2;t=searchable

research certs can be ordered by post from the GRO using the index details - see their website at : www.groireland.ie

Thank you Shane for your prompt reply and I didn't know about the 1864 start of civil registrations.  However as grandmother was 23 on the ships list in 1883 and 22 when she married in 1890 I think I have a problem. Perhaps it wouldn't have been acceptable to be 6 years older than your husband. Will go and see if I can find her at Familysearch  Thanks.

McQuade, Bell and possibly Rothwell of Taghmon Westmeath.

On 6th July 1883 my grandmother Elizabeth McQuade and her sister Alice left Glasgow on the Anglo Indian bound for Brisbane Australia. An amazing fact is that the ship called at Cooktown and the two women would have been very happy to have reached land safely little knowing that in the years to come Elizabeths grand daughter would live there. They were the daughters of Elizabeth (Bell) and Thomas McQuade a farmer and were aged 29 and 23.  Elizabeth aged 19 and Thomas aged 23 were married on 13.9.1851 at Taghmon Westmeath. Elizabeths father, Thomas Bell was also a farmer and there is a Thomas Bell farming on Sir Richard Levinges land. Possibly the girls father died as I found an Elizabeth McQuade (Bell) widow whose father was Thomas Bell marrying on 10.2.1866 Benjamin Rothwell aged 43 single. They had sons. Any information at all about the Bell, McQuade and, if they belong, the Rothwell families would be greatly appreciated.
