Where is he in 1851, I can see him in Poplar with his wife and son Robert in 1841   

I presume the Poplar death is him giving an approx date of birth as 1781.

Not sure where he is in 1851.  He seems to have dropped down south from Ayrshire at some point and married.  Yeah the death in Poplar is him.

The birth records for the different Parishes in Ayrshire appear to be fairly good with no major gaps (except in a couple of smaller parishes) BUT  these OPR's only cover the Church of Scotland if his family was of a different faith or denomination they would not show ( Technically the Ministers of the Church of Scotland were charged at various times to record all Birth's Marriages etc in their respective parishes regardless of which denomination. Some did but many did not)

He can be found as James Fender in 1851 living in Poplar
James Fender age 76 bn Scotland
Joanna age 68 bn Cranbrook, Kent
Ann Hatton grandaughter age 17 bn Poplar
