Lewes church records (1760s)
« on: Monday 13 October 14 21:02 BST (UK) »
Hi,

In a nearby topic, I've been told that my ancestor, Ruth Horton was born in Lewes c1765 (census info). However, no records relating to such a person come up on any searches. So I was wondering - what churches in Lewes were keeping records at this time, and which are not currently available online in any form?

Lewes churches are:
St John sub Castro
St Michael
All Saints
St Anne
St Thomas a Beckett at Cliffe
St John the Baptist Southover

All were in operation at the time you looking at.

FamilySearch has transcriptions of baptisms and marriages for all except St John sub Castro, I think.

The perfect answer, thank you!

I suppose that's the one I'm going to have to track down then...

Hi Stephen

These are the baptisms at St John Sub Castro between 1601 and 1840 for the Horton name

1739   Apr   12   Horton   Mary   f      John   Ann   of Landport
1758   Jun   18   Horton   Mary   f         Mary         by Mr Davis of Glind
1761   Feb   8   Horton   Joseph   m      Mary         Joseph, a natural s of Mary
1764   Jul   1   Horton   Ann   f         Mary

As you can see there is no Ruth and it looks as though Mary was not married

It does show that there was two families with that surname though

Hi again

The burial register only has two entries that look as though they are the first mentioned John / Ann of Landport

1757   March   9   Horton   ..   f   The wife of John
1757   April   21   Horton   John   m   John, of this parish

Sorry I could not pin point Ruth

Thanks for the replies.

I'm now wondering if Ruth was born on Lewes with a different surname. Was she illegitimate, but her baptism.mentions the fathers surname rather than the mothers (presumably Horton), or does a widowed mother remarry after Ruth's birth and she takes on her stepfather's name?

Will try and tackle the possibilities via familysearch!

Seems like the only possibility is a Ruth Mills bap 1767 in.Lewes to Robert and Mary. Unless anyone else can find.any Ruth's b.c. 1765 in Lewes?
