« on: Tuesday 10 July 12 08:12 BST (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to find birth date/baptism for Charles Stoddart b. 1831 Dalkeith.

Father James Stoddart, mother Mary Bryce.

I have tried Scotlands People but nothing comes up.

I would appreciate any help with this

Thank you

Hi Maza ,

I've looked here but can't see anything  :(

https://familysearch.org/

He seems to be on the Census records(ends up in the USA ?) and there is a possible marriage for
parents in 1823 Edinburgh

Hi Maza,

the reasons that you can't find his birth could be, 1)The Records were lost. 2) Destroyed by fie or water. 3) In 1796 the price for recording Births, Marriages or Deaths went up resulting in many not being recorded, I would hazard a guess that it could have been through the latter.

Cheers.

Archie.

I cannot find it on SP, but found it on Family Search,

Just a brief word of caution. That listing is from Ancestral File, and at the bottom of the page it says, "Ancestral File is a collection of genealogical information taken from pedigree charts and family group records submitted to the Family History Department since 1978. The information has not been verified against any official records. Since the information in Ancestral File is contributed, it is the responsibility of those who use the file to verify its accuracy".

I would never take anything as authoritative without seeing an original document to verify the information. It may well be correct, but it's not safe to believe anything you find online without tracking down the source.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hi Forfarian,

Point taken, I would still need verification.
