He was possibly in the Royal Fusiliers.

Hhhmm!  How far are we talking between Loanhead & Slateford?
My ancestor was not actually catholic, surprisingly enough.  Did that make a difference as to what type of 'home' she may have gone to.  ( Assuming that is what happened)

I cannot ever remember mention of her parents.  As far as I know, she never when back to Ireland and went to live in Tamworth after her marriage and remained there all her life.  Even more reason to believe that she was cast out.

Her husband was actually in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.  He ran away to join up!  What a pair they were!!!

By the way Unė kthimi i papenduar - well done for finding that photo.  That is amazing!  ;)

AA route planner shows that it is about 8 and a half miles from Loanhead to Slateford. Loanhead is outside the city boundary in Midlothian. I suspect it would not have been an easy journey by public transport.

I grew up in the Craiglockhart area of Edinburgh(adjacent to Slateford) and know the area well. I too can remember the Inglis Green Laundry vans.

I wonder whether Loanhead was still in operation in 1917?
I cannot find out much about it.

The house the girls went to in Loanhead was in Edgefield road and it was there at that time, to be honest I think there were a few in Edinburgh, one that springs to mind was the old Edinburgh City Hospital but I am sure that was like a workhouse, I think we can count that one out.

Cheers.

Archie.

No, I don't think so. If you are talking about Loanhead, it's on the other side of the city. The City Hospital is possibly in Colinton, or possibly Morningside.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

The City Hospital would I think be in the Colinton area because it was just down from there and Oxgangs, if it was the Hospital she would not have far to walk to work possibly 1.50 miles if that it could be shorter all downhill. There was also the Haig Ferguson Home at Lauriston

Cheers.
