Need help finding marriage proof
« on: Monday 21 April 14 18:22 BST (UK) »
I am needing help finding the marriage of Elizabeth Douglas Born 22 Apr. 1681 daughter of Henrie Douglas and Martha Lockhaeart. Every tree I look at has her married to an Robert Alexander but no one has any proof to back it up. I have tried everything from S P. to Family Search as well as Ancestry.com. This is a very important connection for me and I don't want to give up on it. Any help is appreciated.

Blessings
Kevin

You are right to be cautious. Too many people are very "inventive" when it comes to acquiring ancestors.

Where was Elizabeth born and does the entry in the register give a description or occupation for her father? That information will help point to sources that could produce results.

GR2 Yes her father was a writer. Her mother Martha was the daughter of Samuel Lockhart. She was born 22 Apr. 1681. I have her birth / Baptism registration from SP.

Some of the possible sources are:

- the Register of Deeds - in the National Archives in Edinburgh
- the Register of Sasines - in the National Archives in Edinburgh
- testaments and wills (on Scotland's People)
- if from Edinburgh, the Burgess Rolls

It is also worth searching the on-line catalogue of the National Archives of Scotland.

"Googling" will lead you to the National Archives of Scotland on-line catalogue, which you can easily search. Testaments are available on-line through Scotland's People (though not everyone had a will or testament). The earlier Burgess rolls for Edinburgh are also to be found somewhere on line. Sasines and Deeds need a visit to the Archives.
