Gargin in Londonderry
« on: Sunday 06 July 14 12:39 BST (UK) »
This is a longshot, but I recently managed to go 1 generation back from my 3rd Grandfather who was born in 1801 Market Harborough, Leicestershire. On the Baptism parish record it stated that his Mother was Susannah Gargin,"of Londonderry, Ireland"

Has anyone any information on this name or can anyone point me in the right direction

Many thanks

Hi,
Can't find any GARGINs in Co. Londonderry in the 1740 or 1766 religious census or in the 1831 Census.  However on the 1901 census there are only 15 CARGINS in the county. In the 1766 Religious Census of Co. Londonderry there was a John Cargin, a Roman Catholic, in the town of Magherafelt in the south of Co. Londonderry. In the early 1800s there were several marriages of Cargins in the Roman Catholic church of Lissan which is also in that area.

Hi Kingskerswell

Many thanks for that.  The Market Harborough parish records stated on 3 different children that the Mother Susannah Gargin was from Londonderry, but I can understand that stating your name of "Cargin" with maybe a Derry accent to a Leicestershire vicar could have sounded like "Gargin". There are so many variations of that name.
As I have ancestors on the other branch of my tree in Inishowen, it maybe worth a visit to see what records are held that I could search through.
Again, thanks for your help.
