parents of Ada Amelia Martin b Southwark 1878
« on: Tuesday 08 July 14 19:56 BST (UK) »
Birth cert St Olaves Southwark ref 491  born 10 July 1878 shows her parents as George Martin and Elizabeth formerly Boxall.  However the 1881 census shows Ada A Martin born abt 1878 living 13 Matilda Place in the regn district St Olaves Southwark, the snag is that her parent are shown as George and EMILY J Martin and the orginal page definitely reads Emily not Elizabeth.   I can't reconcile  the two different mothers.   Can anyone help please

Hi is this the family in 1891:-

George Martin 38 occ Iron Plate Maker b Kent
Elizabeth 37
Elizabeth 15
Ada 12
Florrie 10
Thomas 7 months
Residing at Princess Road, Bermondsey
Census Ref RG12/375/22/36
All others born London

If so, then the child Emily J on 1881, looks to have the same year of birth, as the above Elizabeth?

It does look as though the enumerator got the names Emily and Elizabeth confused.

Based on the 1891 census it does look as though the name Emily in the 1881 census is another example of human fallibility.   The year of birth appears to be right so I shall assume it is.   Many thanks
