Jane BERRYMAN
« on: Wednesday 20 November 13 09:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi
My ancestor Jane Berryman (Berriman) married Sampson Chellew in Gulval 6 Dec 1784.
There are a lot of trees concerning this family, but half of these claim Matthew Berryman and Margaret Roach as Jane's parents while the other half say that they are Andrew Berryman and Sarah Quick.
Is there any source available that could confirm the correct parentage please?
Thankyou for any help.
Regards, Rob

There's a baptism for a Jane Berriman 20/07/1761, father Matthew in Gulval (same parish as the marriage).

Marriage for Matthew Berriman and Margaret Roach 24/06/1749 in Gulval.

FreeREG has them both of Gulval Parish at time of Marriage in 1784
Witnesses, Jenny GREEN/Elizabeth WEBB
Unfortunately no Family names.

Samuel/Jane named Children;
ELIZABETH Chelew, 04 Sept 1785, Ludgan
MATHEW BERRIMAN Chillow, 19 Nov 1786, Ludgan
JOHN Chillow, 19 Nov 1786, Ludgan

There is also this which looks like Sampsons name has been mistranscribed, no Mothers name noted;
MARGARET BERRYMAN Chellow, 06 Aug 1792, Gulval (Father as Wimon, sojourner)
This is also on Cornwall OPC
Too much of a coincidence with the Berriman bit to not be their Child to me.

Above on FreeREG

Cornwall OPC has at St Ives to them;
JANE 1797
SAMPSON 1798
HENRY 1803
MARTHA 1803

I would go for Matthew/Margaret as Janes Parents as Sampson/Jane dont name Children Andrew/Sarah.
Also Brides usually Married in their own Parish which miriamkinga noted.

Trish :)

Marriage;
13 Feb 1819, Madron;
William ELLIS, Bachelor, Groom signed
Margaret Berryman CHELLEW, Spinster, Bride made her mark
Witnesses, Sampson CHELLEW (mark of), Mary WARNE and Tob. READ
(Cornwall OPC)

A Trees have Sampson Snr dying 1817, this must be Sampson born 1798 who was the Witness.

Thank you for all the info.
I did already know the details of both families and the details of the birth of both Janes, just wasn't sure which Jane I should be pursuing. I think that Matthew and Margaret are the real parents of Jane following the naming pattern of their children, especially since Sampson's parents are John and Elizabeth who are also the names of their first two children.
The Sampson Snr who died 1817 is actually the husband of Jane, born 1761.
Thanks again,
Rob

Hi Rob,
Yes I realsied Sampson Snr died 1817 and I wasnt that clear in what I posted. As he died 1817 I presume it was Sampson Jnr who witnessed Margarets Marriage.
I think you are on the right track with Janes Parents :)
