Name interests in Hawick
« on: Friday 19 March 10 22:05 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have any connections with the following?
Joseph Albert MAUGHAN, aka Albert, born 1892, Dearham, Cumberland, married Mary Conroy, born 1900, Hawick.
Known children - a few of which married POW's interred in/or near Hawick:
Margaret, married Jozef Baran
Doreen, married Wilhelm Andreas Martin
Isobel, married Tadeusz Ferszter
Lillian, married Thomas David Watson
Kathleen, married Joseph McCutcheon

do any of the above mean anything to fellow researchers?

In St Marys and St Cuthberts churchyard in Hawick Inscription 290      In Loving memory of Albert Maughan 18-9-1868 to 18-3-1976  Grandson  William Martin 10-7-1952 to 4-9-1952)Obviously son of Doreen and William Martin.

I suspect that the POW camp was Stobs army camp (check the web) The camp started about late 1800/1900 training  local units like the Border Rifles etc. then KOSB etc right through both wars and was used as a POW camp for different nationalities. Our grandad went there and we have postcards from the original tented troops from 1903-5 .
I dont actually know if there was a POW camp in Hawick.

As he died 1976 you can get his death cert showing parents etc likewise the grandson.

Hi gods1967,
Lovely to hear from you.  My husband's grandfather was James Helmer Maughan, Joseph Albert's brother.
I have found out some very interesting facts about the family, perhaps we could share notes?

Hello again gods1967, I forgot to mention, I have a wonderful photo of Joseph Albert Maughan, in uniform, standing with another soldier, and written on the back is "Ponty & Albert".  Would you have any idea who Ponty is?

Mother Kathleen (Lena) say's ponty was either his brother or nephew as they were both "nicknamed" Ponty. Mother is the only surviving name on your list except Tom Watson who is still alive in Australia (queensland). wherein Australia are you? Tom's family are all in Queensland and Victoria. My email is
