Elmers of Warboys
« on: Saturday 11 August 12 11:53 BST (UK) »
Hello All,
I have seen from another post here on the Hunts. board that the records for Warboys are not widely available.  Does this mean that it's not possible to find information from that village?  (I am not able to go to Hunts. Records Archives since I live abroad).
My 3 x great grandfather was John Elmer of Warboys, a tailor born around 1815.  He married Jane Reed (or Reid) also of Warboys and they had 9 children  then in the 1880's (after 1881) they moved to Gloucestershire where John died in 1885.
I have the family on all the censuses but can't find anything at all about John's parents or siblings, nor have I found the marriage of John to Jane which was probably around 1835/36.  There are a fair number of Elmers on the census in Warboys but I have no idea how they link to my John.
Am I stuck permanently?  :(
Thanks for any advice

Of course you're not!

Whilst, like most of us, you don't have access to Huntingdon Archives, they do have a reasonably priced, friendly, research service. The marriage to Jane Reed was in 1835 in Warboys, per Hunts Marriage Index.

So whilst Warboys parish register hasn't been filmed by the LDS, Huntingdon Archives will look up baptisms in Warboys for you, which will cost a few quid.

Hello Mark
Thank you very much indeed for adding to this old thread.  It's very much appreciated.
I've pieced together a bit more information over the years but  I did not have the baptism dates nor the actual date of John and Hannah's wedding.  John was apprenticed as a tailor to one Robert Taylor of Warboys in 1806 so he probably married the boss's daughter.
I think, however, that John senior's parents were William Elmer (1766-1843) and Sarah surname unknown (1768 - 1811).  I've been unable to trace this marriage and this would be a great find.
Thank you again
Bev

Dear Bev

There is a John ELMER whose parents are William and Sarah who was baptised on 4 January 1795 at Warboys. However, unless he was not a baby at the time, he would have only been 15 at the time of the marriage to Hannah. There is also a burial of a John ELMER on 31 May 1817 aged 22 which would fit in with this John ELMER.

William and Sarah also had children William (bap 8 April 1798), Mary (bap. 29 Dec 1799), Richard (bap. 11 Oct 1801) and Susanna (bap. 1 Jan 1809).

There is no record of a William marrying a Sarah in the Warboys register.

Thank you again for this information.
I have to admit that I'm not convinced by the parents of John senior being John and Abigail, for the simple reason that in all the family going downwards and sideways I have not found one single daughter or granddaughter called Abigail.  You'd think that someone in the family would name a girl after the mother/grandmother.
I know this is not conclusive but it's certainly unusual.
I have Sarah Elmer's burial in 1811 noted as 'wife of William Elmer, farmer'.
They obviously got married in another parish.
Best wishes
Bev
