Ann Wady Croot
« on: Friday 17 January 14 20:16 GMT (UK) »
(Or- Annie Wadie Croot).
My great grandmother, she married  Albert William Davies Wood in 1869 and appears in the censuses up to her death in 1928 age 81.
From these and from her birth record she appears to have been born in 1846/7 in Brampton.
I cannot find her in the 1851 or 61 censuses, and should be most grateful for any information during this period, and would be most interested to learn of her parents.
Any information gratefully received.
Green family ,West Hanningfield and Writtle,Essex, 1700-1900,plus other Essex areas and later dates.Collins,Dobbs,Terry,Betts,Hucknall etc,Nottinghamshire.

This will be her birth registration from which you can get her birth certificate

Births Dec 1846
Croot  Ann     Huntingdon  14 193

Familysearch says she is on the 1851 census

This is the family living in Brampton in 1851

CROOT, Edmund Head Married M 35 1816 Butcher Brampton, Huntingdonshire
CROOT, Elizabeth Wife Married F 50 1801  Brampton, Huntingdonshire
CROOT, Ann Daughter  F 4 1847  Brampton, Huntingdonshire

They are transcribed as Gort on Ancestry. They are all born in Brampton and are living at Brampton Hut Cottage
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

1861 census, badly transcribed. for the parents living in Brampton (Ann is not with them)

Edmund Gort  45 (Croot)
 Elizabeth Gort  55 (Croot)
 Henry Tenzer  7 (Tingay)

The Henry Tenzer is Henry Tingay who is down as the wife's grandson. So from that we know which Elizabeth married Edmund in 1846

Cannot find Ann in 1861 but there is no death between 1851 and 1861 - its possible she was missed off
James Stott c1775-1850. Thank you.

there is confusingly a marriage for a George Wady and Mary Croot 11 th June 1833. All Saints Huntingden.
Also bap1842 for an Edmund Croot Wady, there are other children(Wady) including a Mary ann born 1846.
This family is on the censuses but Ann Croot found above looks a better bet.

1841 census in Brampton has this group

Martha Tingey  75
 Elizabeth Tingey  30
 Henry Tingey  10

It is speculation but I think Martha is Elizabeth's mother. Henry is Elizabeth's son born out of wedlock. This would mean Elizabeth was a spinster when she married Edmund. The 1841 Henry is likely the father of the Henry on the 1861 census with Elizabeth and Edmund

Martha is on the 1851 but I cannot make out where it says she was born although it has been transcribed as Cumberland !

I think it's Cambs, Agness, which is possibly Papworth St Agnes, which is about 5 miles across the fields from Brampton

The only Martha baptism in Papworth St Agnes that fits is that of Martha Pope on 10 July 1768 daughter of Raymond and Rebecca. There's a marriage on the IGI in Bourn Cambs on 24 Aug 1794 between Martha Pope and John Tinger which might be her. It may well be as the transcript shows John Tinger was of the parish of Brampton.
