Landing Barges for D-Day
« on: Friday 17 October 14 19:22 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
is there a site where the original working names of the landing barges are given?I understand most were working on the Thames prior.

D-Day shipping consisted of specialist Landing Craft, of all sizes (as well use warships). Not Barges. London barges were used during the Dunkirk evacuations but I have never seen references to Thames craft being used for D-Day.

Dear Spikey68,
Thanks for your reply.
Quote from the excellent book,"Those wallowing beauties "by W.D.Jarman,"Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten requisitioned over a thousand Thames barges. Some four hundred were commandeered by the Royal Navy when they were converted, many provided with ramps, armed and motorized. The sole objective of these unlikely craft was the support of a seaborne invasion".
care to respond?

That is landing craft but if you mean landing barges then that is slightly different;

Thank you youngtug,
Back to my original question,Thames barges had names before they were requisitioned. They were then initialed i.e.L.B.E.,L.B.V..etc,
followed by a number. Is there somewhere where the original names are known to match the new i.d.given.Thanks.

If memory serves me correctly there was even one with the designation LBK - Landing Barge, Kitchen - a conversion of a lighter to culinary purposes!  ;D
Glamorgan - Carpenter, Chamberlain, Ellis, Watkins, Rees, Bevan
Wiltshire - Carpenter, Chamberlain, Ellis, Merrett
Essex - Burdon, Taylor, Menzies
Canada - Burdon, Parkinson
Australia - Carpenter, Burdon

 Dear "alanmack",regarding the LBK you are correct. For anyone with a big interest in these  remarkable barges you should try and get a copy of the book which i mentioned in an earlier post,it's a fantastic read.It was printed in 1997.Also the "naval-history" site links given by "youngtug" should be checked out. It's brilliant.
