Look up please-Where and when did he die
« on: Sunday 17 March 13 11:37 GMT (UK) »
Help finding an elusive death.
Charles Edward Halls born 1905 Islington Middlesex.
Parents Charles Edward Halls (died WW1 1917) and Helen Maria Halls (nee Lawrence) also known as Nellie!
Brother Bertram Frederick Halls  (my father) born 1910
Census 1911 has the family living at 258 Daubeney Road, Lower Clapton, South Hackney.

My father (deceased) told me that Charles dies as a teenager certainly before 1922 when my dad left for Canada. All I know is that Charles had a leg amputated due to cancer and later died. I don't know where he died either.

I have tried for many years to find this death and nothing comes close, I have even sent for a few certificates but no luck. I think my mistake was to concentrate locally, I know the family lived in Leyton in 1917 as that was where Charles the father put for his home address when signing up for service WW1. The family were in Leyton minus the father in 1922 as that was the address given by my father when he left for Canada.

Young Charles had certainly died by 1922 when my father left for Canada. I may well be that the sick boy may have been sent off to another county for care.

Any help much appreciated.
Thanks
Sue

There is a C.E Halls registered with Parish Burial Records
MI Ref: 220
Year:1914
Althorne
St Andrew Church ( Anglican)
Essex

Looks like there is a headstone, which might give you more information, or at least rule this out. The information came from the Essex Family History

There sounds like there is a real story here and I have no wish to cause any upset.

I see that Bertram Halls returned to England in 1931 - his proposed address in Uk being 40 Oakdale Road, Leytonstone.   I cannot see on outgoing passenger lists when he left the UK.   However, as he was only 12 in 1922 I wonder as to the circumstances of his departure.

I see that a Helena M. Halls married a George H. Pullen in the Mar.qtr.1922 West Ham.  Was this a remarriage for his mother?  Did this herald the departure to Canada?

As regards Charles Edward Halls b.1905 - I get the feeling that maybe your father wasn't told the whole truth about him.

There were only 3 Charles Edward Halls born 1903 to 1906:

Charles Edward 1903 Lewisham who died in Lewisham in 1961
Charles Edward A. 1903 Ipswich who died 1984 Ipswich
Charles Edward b.1905 Islington - i.e. yours.   However, it looks like this person died in the Mar.qtr. 1953 Essex South Western!

I can find no death entry for a Halls bc.1905 that fits with your account hence wondering whether your father had been told the truth regarding his death.

There is a Lewis Data Family tree on ancestry that has this family and Charles Edward Halls b. 1905 d. 1921, aged 16 in West Ham. Might be worth contacting them and asking where they got that information from

Hi Debglaze,
I have to rule that one out as I know he was alive in 1914 as I have a picture of him with his dad in 1918 just before his dad went to WW1 and was killed. But yes I have to think beyond the box so to speak away from London possibly.
Thank you

The death in 1953 in South Western is a distinct possibility after all there is no other death remotely fitting his name and age. If it is then how awful that dad should be told by his mother that his brother was dead. Thinking about it Essex South Western is not that far from Leyton and Charles could have been sent off to a care facility in the area.
