It'd be helpful to know when her husband Henry died, presumably it was between 1871 and 1881 but I can't find a death then, being a fisherman I guess he could have died at sea?
Mercy remarried in 1887 to George Tyrrell but on the 1891 census he is missing and she is living with her grandson.
Mercy ended up in the USA in 1910 living with her grandchildren.

Henrys death is elusive - thats one of the missing links. The other mystery is why Edith was bn Brentford not Eastbourne , unless Henry was already dead/missing/at sea and Mercy went to her sisters for the birth.

And it is still assumption that Edith is a child of Mercys, either by Henry or otherwise.

Hi there

Just butting in on this one.

It may also be worth looking at whether Henry and Mercy had any more children early in their marriage who for some reason don't appear with them in 1871, in case Edith was in fact their granddaughter rather than their daughter.

That crossed my mind too, avm.
The best way to sort this one really would be to get the birth cert!  Otherwise we just keep coming up with possible scenarios, and no way of knowing which is correct!

Oh well I suppose I'll have to bite the bullet and order the birth cert!

Yes very droll! I've already ordered it plus others before but usually for nearer relations or ancestors.
