RAISBECK Help
« on: Monday 13 November 06 17:27 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,

I would like help with a DOROTHY RAISBECK.  She married Rev Thomas Hanson at Brougham Westmorland in 1725.
Two Children Elizabeth 1729 & Mary 1727 both at Kirkby Stephen

I can find nothing about her at all.
Any Help with the Raisbeck family would be gratefully received

Sorry you have not had a reply to this.   Have you looked at the parish records to find her baptism?  Brougham is on the IGI so if she is not there then you need to spread the search to nearby villages which may not be on the IGI.
I am assuming the marriage record says of this parish but of course that only means at the time of the wedding so she could be born anywhere.  Have you looked to see where there are other Raisbeck families?  If she was marrying a vicar then one would assume that her family were reasonable well off so wills might be helpful.     There was a Josiah Raisbeck farming at Battlebarrow near Appleby in 1757.   Not too far from Brougham and Kirkby Stephen.
Have you checked to see if anyone is doing a one name study of Raisbeck?    There is a name in my 2002 Genealogical Research Directory.

Hi Andrea,
Thank you for your help.
I can find no Dorothy born in Brougham - looked at records office.

Thomas Hanson & Dorothy besides having a property in Kirkby Stephen he left to his daughter Mary Hanson also had a Burgage House in St Lawrence Parish of Appleby which he left to his daughter Elizabeth and one in Colby which he left to his wife Dorothy. So in fact they could easily have had a connection with the family of RAISBECKS in Appleby. His will is dated 1733. His marriage to Dorothy was in 1725 so his children were just infants when he died.
There are two others Raisbecks around Appleby, besides Josiah, having children around the right period. Hugh and JOHN & Mary Raisbeck.
Also a William & Mary of Kirkby Thore which could be a contender.
Dorothy's first daughter was called Mary.

Good idea about the wills - will e-mail Carlisle and see if there are any.

How do I check to see if anyone is doing a one-name study?

Thank you very much for the ideas - they will get me going again in the new year.

Hi Andrea,
Just to let you know that Carlisle Records Office replied very quickly & I have now ordered a few Wills which I think are around the right time and they will post them out prior to shut down for Christmas. Hopefully I shall find something in them of interest.
I find the Carlisle Records Office extremely helpful.

Thanks

There are some pre 1858 wills online at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/ - always worth a look as you can download them for a modest amount.   The one name study people have a website so if you google it then you should find it.  GOONS??
I will send  personal messgae with the name of the person doing Raisbeck in my directory.

I haven't found anything about your Dorothy but I have found some marriage licences for the families that have been mentioned.  This may help to supplement/clarify the information contained in the wills you've obtained.

10 April 1708
Raisbeck, Hugh, Burrells, Appleby, yeoman
Smith Anne
     Wilson, Edward, Appleby, yeoman
no direction for marriage

4 May 1718
Hugh Raisbeck of Burrels is the bondsman for the marriage of John Robinson and Mary Wilson of Hoff Raw (more details if you want them)

6 Jan 1721/2
Raisbeck, Josiah, Appleby
Bellas, Jane
     Bellas, Jos, Long Martin
marriage to take place at Bongate (*)

3 May 1848 or 1849 (8 is crossed out and replaced by a 9 in one place)
Raisbeck, George, Battle Borough, p Bongate, butcher
Loadman, Mary, Appleby, spinster
       Raisbeck John, Kirkby Thore, clk
marriage to take place at Orton

There is another marriage of an Ann Raysbeck of Middleton in Durham in 1735.

Could Dorothy be a widow when she marries Thomas Hanson?  Do you know anything about Thomas Hanson's origins?

(*) Worth looking at the MIs at Appleby St Michael and Long Marton and referenced in Bellasis if you are interested in this family.

regards
Deborah

Hi Deborah,
Thanks for all the information.
I have now received some wills from Carlisle and found that Dorothy was born at Hangingshaw in the Parish of Long Marton.

So when I received your e-mail to look at Long Marton records it gave me the impetus to write to the Kendal records Office and see if they could find her there.
I now know she was born 1693 daughter of George Raisbeck of Brampton Long Marton.
So Good result. I shall now have to find the marriage of George to see who her mother was.

The other Raisbecks you have given me I am sure must be connected in some way as it is an unusual name.

Thank you everyone for your help & ideas.

Hi there, my grandfather on my mother's side was a George Raisbeck. He married my grandmother, Lilian, in 1911 in Warwick.  They went to Australia in about 1925 I think and they split up there, my mother and grandmother came back here after that. I don't know any more about him after that but would very much like to. I wondered if there's any connection....
