This Caithness surname in the past was most numerous in the parish of Dunnet. Does anyone know a derivation of the surname ? Was it a place name in the parish ? All avenues of research including Brotchies & oral history drawn a blank so far.

Black's Surnames of Scotland just says it is common in Caithness and gives one 18th century example. The best known Brotchie was probably J. R. Brotchie, who was in charge of the art collection at the Kelvingrove Museum in Glasgow. I have a couple of pencil drwings by him.

Graham.

My Brotchie's are from Westside, Dunnet,  William Brotchie B.1796. I read in some ancient book of  a Braeckie. A Viking I think not sure what read that was though.
