:) Phew everyone - thanks for all the input - need to do a bit of sorting and will revert - greatly appreciate time taken by everyone, particularly regarding the marriage to Sarah and her death. Was not aware of daughter (Isabella Ann) born to second wife Emma in 1869, however follows as he had an elder sister Isabella Anne born Devon, UK 1 Sept 1824. The son, John Powning Stark (b 15 March 1868 Onehunga, Auckland) was my wife's grandfather. There were lengthy legal proceedings between London, Auckland and Australia instituted by John Powning Stark between 1891-1896 to establish his claim to properties in NZ and UK. He departed NZ (as far as I can ascertain) in 1891 and arrived in South Africa in 1896 - not sure where he was in-between years. He established a number of businesses related to gold mining and property close to Johannesburg ;)

Interested to know when Henry Powning Stark arrived in New Zealand from Australia. He was born 8 October 1826 in Devon, England. Arrived in Melbourne aged 24 aboard the 'Sirocco'. Married Sarah Cooper 1854? (Pioneer Index Victoria Reg 774).

Hello again

Mmm ... something a wee bit odd with dates ? (or is it just me?   ??? )

The Henry STARK aged 24 who arrived in Melbourne per "Sirocco" in August 1858 can't (I don't think), be the same man as Henry Powning STARK. ?
[1858 less 24 years = 1834 (approx. birth year) so this 1858 Henry STARK, is 8 years younger.]

Henry Powning STARK is also listed as having been in Auckland in 1858 (in relation to the subdividing of allotments in the area around Blockhouse Bay /or Titirangi. )

Your observation most appreciated. Need to rethink. Was not aware of HPS in business in Auckland in 1858. Thanks

PapersPast :

"Daily Southern Cross" (Auckland) - 13 June 1868 - Fire at Onehunga ... page 4

.... fire at the Court House hotel, owned at occupied by Mr H. Powning STARK.

- the fire said to have been first discovered by Miss STARK who at once aroused her parents.
- at the time there were 8 persons residing in the building - MR and MRs STARK, 4 children, Mrs Skeene a lodger and a servant.

------------
;) Thanks Lucy. Wonder where the four children come from? One would be John (born 15 March 1868) but did Emma Lindsay bring one, two or three with her from previous marriage? Any idea where I could look :D

From "Papers Past", 'New Zealand Herald' dated 19.2.1866, death notice:

"On February 18th at Flagstaff, North Shore, Auckland, Sarah Jane, wife of Mr. H.P. Stark, aged 38 years". etc.

Minniehaha.  :)
:) :) great. many thanks Minniehaha - major breakthrough. Mike

STARK – PUDNEY On March 4, at St Sepulchre’s, by the Rev B T Dudley, H P Stark Esq of
Auckland to Emma Lindsay, second daughter of Randolph Pudney Esq, Chelmsford,
Essex. [Southern Cross, 8 Mar 1867]

Cheers
KHP

Mmm ... was just a little curious as to why bride's surname shows in the Marriage Index as LINDSAY when the marriage notice (apparently) showed "STARK - PUDNEY" ???

A check of the "Daily Southern Cross" - 8 March 1867, reveals though that the notice doesn't actually show "STARK - PUDNEY" ... it just begins with the words ... "On March 4, at ... "
------------------------------

Hi Mike  ... yes it would seem that Emma, d/o of Randolph PUDNEY, probably had a prior marriage to a "Mr LINDSAY" ?

I can't find a reference in NZ Marriage records, so will need to explore further afield.

Hi again

... So, Emma (formerly LINDSAY) was the mother of John Powning STARK.

>  Do you know what became of Emma ?

>  Was she the same lady who had a marriage (shortly after the death of HP STARK) to a Jacob JUNG (occupation : Baker).  ??
