Which Archive for 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons 1906-1918?
« on: Monday 24 March 14 11:06 GMT (UK) »
I have a ancestor who was (probably) in the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons somewhere in the period 1906-1918, and who died in WW1.

I would, of course, like to firm this up.

Should I be looking in;

a) The Inniskilling regimental museum:

http://www.inniskillingsmuseum.com/trace-a-relative/

b) The Royal Dragoon Guard museum and archive:

http://www.rdgmuseum.org.uk/history-and-research/researching-a-soldier/

c) The National Archive:

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/details?uri=C151412

I'm a little confused :-(

Only the first one. The 6th Dragoon Guards were heavy cavalry and a different regiment to the 6th Dragoons, who were light cavalry. However, their regimental museum may not have a copy of an individual's service record - very few do.

You should look on Ancestry to see if his is one of the one-third that survived WW2 bombing. You should check what Ancestry call 'Service' and 'Pension' records.

What was his number? The museum should be able to work out when he enlisted from that.

Have you looked for him in the 1911 Census? They were in India but they should be on the census. Regulars enlisted for 12 years, but it could be split between being in uniform and the Army Reserve. This was usually 7+5, but 8+4 and even 3+9 existed. So he may have been a Reservist in 1911 and not mentioned it on the census - they only served two weeks a year.

I should have said; I think it's my guy here:

I actually chased all the way down the descendant tree via FreeBMD, did a bit of internet stalking, and sent a letter to a living descendant I found...
