I have just found out that my gr gr grandfather was Quartermaster Sergeant Hughes ,he was in a Welsh Regiment and was in India in 1834 ,how can I find more about this .cath

QMS was the Quartermaster's right hand man. They were often promoted to Q M and given an honoury commission.

I have a copy of a letter from a Captain regarding Quartermaster Sergeant's daughter the letter was dated 20th May 1841 Kurrachee, does that help ,no first  name or initial .cath

I am cannot scan the letter but I could email it ,Hughes is my  3xgrandfather  his daughter Hannah married a Sgt Gilmore in 1834 in India he died in 1839 ish and she married Sgt William Coleman 4th regiment in 1840 my 2x grandfather ,when she married Sgt J  Gilmore ,one of the witnesses was Sgt Hughes they were both in the 41st ,again I dont know where or when she was born ,I assume India ,she died in India around 1844 .
            The Captains name has been translated as L Steering  or sterling 4th Regiment .cath
