the place to start is with a marriage cert if you dont already have one.

Are you sure the marriage took place in Castlepollard ?
There are possible matching references for the marriage on the BMD Index in Oldcastle registration district which covers part of Co. Meath. Castlepollard was in Castletowndelvin registration district. :

  Name : James Pettigrew
  Event Type : Marriage
  Year : 1863
  Registration District : Oldcastle
  Volume : 9 / Page : 327

A matching entry appears for an Eliza Mccann

a research cert should show residences of the bride & groom, father names etc.

see : Introduction to Irish Records

Details included on a Marriage Cert

Remember to check the Resource boards :  Ireland, Dublin, Antrim & Cork (and stickies at the top of other county sub-forums)

there's a partial extracted civil marriage on family search with a refarence to 'Castlepollard,Westmeath'

  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGJX-JTT

conflicts with the index entry.

p.s. since this marriage took place before 1864 and is in civil records, it was non-Catholic.

James seems to have been a builder and may have moved around Ireland for work. Most of the children seem to be registered in Navan, Co Meath but several showing up in other areas - e.g. a civil birth for an Eliza Matilda in 1872 in Tobercurry district Co. Sligo, and an 1864 baptism of son James Thomas in Dublin city. see Baptism of James Thomas Pettigrew, St. Mary's CofI

The corresponding extracted civil birth record shows parents as James Justin Pettigrue, Eliza Charlotte Mc Cann, and matching date of birth. See :  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FPHK-XNL

James Pettigrew/grue m. Eliza McCann 1863, Oldcastle, Co. Meath.

This topic should rightfully be filed under Co. Meath, as Oldcastle registration district is in that county.

The marriage of James Pettigrew and Eliza McCann was registered in the Oldcastle civil registration district of Co. Meath.  Familysearch has the marriage date as 23 Dec 1863.  James' father was also named James Pettigrew.  Eliza's father was James McCann.

Their firstborn was James Thomas, and his civil registration birth record has important info.

30 Sep 1864, birth of James Thomas, birthplace 138 Upper Dorset St., Dublin.  Son of James Justin Pettigrue of Ardbraccan, Co. Meath and Eliza Charlotte Pettigrue, formerly McCann.  James' occupation is builder.

Referring to the Dorset St. address, in the 1834 Pettigrew & Oulton Dublin Directory, at 137 Dorset st, Upper, there was James Pettigrue, marble yard.  Note the surname spelling, as it appears that is how it was traditionally spelled by this family.  It can sometimes be in records as Pettigrew, however.

In the 1840 Pettigrew & Oulton Dublin Directory, was listed Pettigrue & Goodwillie, marble yard 138 Dorset st, Upper.

So, it appears James Thomas in 1864 was born at his grandparent's home in Dublin.  He was also baptized in Dublin, as 138 Dorset St. Upper is in the civil parish of St. Mary, as given on his baptismal record.

The birth record of James Thomas also states that his father James Justin was a builder, residence Ardbraccan, Co. Meath.

From other marriage records, it appears that James Justin had at least two siblings, Thomas and Mary.  All three had father James Pettigrue, builder.  All three had a connection to Ardbraccan, Co. Meath.

09 June 1874 Thomas Perseverance Pettigrue of Ardbraccan, Co. Meath, builder, m. Lizzie Ballantine, governess.

07 August 1879 Mary Pettigrue of Ardbraccan, Co. Meath m. Alexander Ballantine, marble mason.  Mary's father James' occupation was "monumental builder."

The Ballantine spouses were siblings, with father Archibald, marble mason.  Both marriages were recorded in Dublin.

James Pettigrue, Sr., may have had some financial difficulties in 1840, as seen from this legal notice:

Freemans Journal 1763-1924, Monday, December 21, 1840; Page: 1
"CITY OF DUBLIN.
EQUITY EXCHEQUER.  I will... let to the highest and best Bidder, for Seven Years pending this cause, from the 29th doy of September last, all that and those, the Concerns in which the Defendant, James Pettigrue, lately carried on business as a Stonecutter, situate in Dorset-street, in the City of Dublin,..."

And again in 1858.  This legal notice shows James Pettigrue, Sr., had moved operations out of Dublin into Co. Meath:

Freemans Journal 1763-1924 | Saturday, February 20, 1858 | Pg 1

"THE IRISH BANKRUPT AND INSOLVENT ACT, 1857—IN INSOLVENCY.  In the Matter of James Pettigrue, late of Kells, in the County of Meath, Builder, formerly of Upper Dorset-street, Dublin, an Insolvent...."

Things must have gotten better in Co. Meath.  Son Thomas carried on a successful limestone quarry business there.  Thomas died 6 Apr 1922, age 77, at White Quarry, Ardbraccan, Co. Meath.

In the next post, more about James Pettigrue, Jr., i.e. James Justin Pettigrue who married Eliza McCann.

Petticrew, Pettigrew, Bedigrew, and all variants.

Back to James Pettigrue, Jr., i.e. James Justin Pettigrue who married Eliza McCann.

The couple had several children, of which I found births for:
30 Sep 1864, James Thomas
12 Feb 1867, Mary Anne Charlotte Elizabeth
5 Sept 1868, Euphemia McCartney
6 June 1872, Eliza Matilda
3 Aug 1875, Frederick William, b. at White Quarry, Ardbraccan
29 Nov 1876, George Edward
4 July 1878, Francis James
11 July 1880, Robert Theophilus

In most of the birth records the father's occupation is builder.  In the 1872 record his occupation is house builder.  In the 1878 record his occupation is stone cutter.  In the 1880 record his occupation is builder and farmer.

Before Robert T. was one year old, the family pulled up stakes and emigrated to Canada.

Passenger lists of the POLYNESIAN arriving in Quebec, Que. on 1881-05-02, from Liverpool, sailed 21 April 1881.

Robert T., boarder, single, 20, b. Ireland  11 Jul 1880, clerk

Florance immigrated 1887, the rest 1881.  James was Methodist, the other three were Presbyterian.

Most of these Pettigrues, and more, are buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Sherbrooke, Estrie Region, Quebec, Canada:

Information for marriages, births and some baptisms came from www.irishgenealogy.ie.  For civil registration records with images, this offers the most complete information.
Some of the same info is at familysearch.org, but may not be as extensive.
