William Burns born in Cork
« on: Sunday 16 March 14 10:18 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone
My great, great, grandfather William Burns was born approx. 1791 in Cork, according to Scottish and English census. He married a Mary from Poole, Dorset, England. In 1841 and 1851 he was living at the coastguard station at Kincardineshire, Scotland, and was the Chief Boatman in P Service.  I would really like to find out who his parents were, and if  they were Irish, but I have hit the usual brick wall!
Can anyone help please.

Yes, he had shifted to Poole between 1851 and 1861. Although he was born in Ireland, I don't know where he married. According to 1841 (Scottish) census and following census, there eldest daughter Ann Burns was born in Hampshire in 1821. So they went to Catterline, Scotland before 1829.
I have searched the Mormon site, and rootsireland, so I'll look up the Irish Family History Foundation.
Many thanks

Hi

The following may provide a clue as to where to search for further information on the family, and is taken from Coastguard records.

In July 1819 the following information was provided to the House of Commons as a return of officers and men nominated to the Preventive Service, one of whom was William Burn: nominated March 1817, Boatman aged 27, born Cork, trade brought up to - the sea, length of time at sea - 12 years, annual salary £5.0.0. This document shows that he was paid off from the Scourge Revenue Lugger and transferred to the Preventive Boat Service.

I subsequently traced his appointment to Hurst Castle Preventive Station on 15 March 1817 (ADM 175/1 pdf.49), where on the 27 May 1820 he was promoted to Commissioned Boatman.
On 27 April 1821 he was moved to Abbotsbury Castle PS, where he was promoted to Chief Boatman on 16 Nov 1821 (175/1 pdf.60).

Frustratingly there is now a gap in the records, and I next found him at Katerline Coastguard Station on 18 October 1827, from where he was discharged from the Coastguard Service on 12 April 1849 (175/22 pdf 42).

Hope this is some interest and help. NB in the records he appears as both Burn and Burns

Martin

Hi Martin
Thank you so much for all the wonderful information. William must have gone to sea at an early age, and then to Hampshire and on to Dorset. This all ties in with his marriage to Mary and their first child in 1821, before heading to Scotland, sometime before 1829.
I have been reading about the Scourge Revenue Luggers on the internet. Such fascinating reading. This has given me some details to go by.

1791 is very early for Irish records. Cork is the biggest county in the country and you need a more specific location? Do you have names of other family members to provide some context? What religious denomination was he? This is a difficult search without answers to these questions.
