I see that William was baptised as William Wickenson Comber 5th June 1831 St Nicholas Brighton.  Son of Isaac Wickenson Comber and Frances Comber.   Occupation Servant, North Lane Cottages.

The same occupation and address for John Comber baptised in 1833.  Father Isaac Vickerson Comber, mother Frances.

Small piece containing info about Gorringe family members and where they lived.

and a newspaper transcript containing info

Just interesting bits, it won't help the puzzle though.

It all helps build up a picture and does confirm that Elizabeth was a widow in 1841 so not the wife of the Thomas who died in 1844.

Thanks again. I had seen the glynde.info references but I will definitely join SFHG to see if I can flesh out more details.
Re. Wickison/Comber - it seems that nearly all of Isaac Wickison's children had a different variant of the name on their baptism records and the Comber was quickly dropped. I've never been able to work out where it actually came from (see an earlier post from me re Isaac Wickison).

Interesting.    Grace was baptised at Ringmer Jan 17 1813 - abode Lodom.  Not sure where that is.  Thomas is a labourer again.

'Lodom' is actually 'Sodom' - the Ringmer vicar's name for the hamlet of Ashton Green in his parish. He uses it in several entries. It indicates his view of its inhabitants.
