Lochgelly or Cowdenbeath: Gorman, Reilly, Murray
« on: Wednesday 16 July 08 09:27 BST (UK) »
Looking for the family of my grandmother, Bridget Murray Gorman or "Betty" , Born Dec. 30, 1898 Lochgelly, Scotland (or Cowdenbeath. She emigrated to Canada in 1924. Her family heritage was Irish Catholic, from County Cork on the maternal side.
Her mother's name was Reilly, I believe, (not sure of the spelling) and she died age 42 of dropsy. Bridget had a younger sister, "Peg" (Elizabeth) who emigrated to the Bronx, New York. Their father (Gorman) remarried and had at least 2 children with the second wife.
I would like to learn what became of them, and also find the name of my great grandmother's family, to try and trace their Irish origins. Can anyone help or offer suggestions?

:) Hi DiddyMiller! Thank-you so much for all the effort you've put into this- My father would have been so happy, as he tried for years to find any information on his family, to no avail. My grandmother did once tell me the name of her Irish family from Cork, but the paper it was written on was lost and I've been trying to learn it ever since. That is the only thing I'm still missing, but now with the family names in Scotland known, that should help.

Hello dawnone,

Welcome to RootsChat!  We're all here waiting and ready to help  :D

Diddy has provided much information.

However, it's fun to do one's own research  :)

The 'sticky' at the top of the Scotland General board should help you in general terms.  See:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,24468.0.html

ScotlandsPeople at:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
is a very useful site (it's pay per view but charges are reasonable).

The IGI (International Genealogical Index) at:
http://www.familysearch.org
is another great (free) site and is especially useful for Scottish civil registration records from 1855 to about 1874..
Diddy's reference to the marriage of Michael and Ann presumably comes from there.

A parent search (put Michael REILLY in the father box, Bridget MURRAY in the mother box, select British Isles as the region) on that site brings up one child - Ann REILLY b 10 Nov 1873, Auchterderran, Fife, Scotland.

Incidentally, it's a good idea to post all the information/queries about one family on one thread so RootsChatters don't duplicate searches.  Or, at least, give cross-references to other relevant threads  ;D

All the very best,

JAP
