Thanks for access to this comprehensive work of yours. The maps are very helpful too.

My ancestors are proving hard to locate.

Mary Anderson married James Mallon in 1855 in Clongesh

Her parents were Anderson and Sharkie from the same area.

A son  Patrick was born to Mary Anderson and her husband in Cambusnethan Lanarkshire in 1875 and the name changed to Mullen.Any clues as to why the name change?  Which church would have been in  Clongesh-anything to do with religion?
(The Mullens were Catholics.)What would have brought them to Lanarkshire ?
I'd be very grateful for any information about the district and circumstances in that time and any links which you think might help in my search.

Hi there - Records adre a lot scarcer for Catholics - they literally were second class folks at the time, so the land leases etc. don't help. I just checked the tithe applotment records, which was almost a head of household census when done - in the case of Clongesh it was 1825. There is only one Mallon there at the time - Charles Mallon in the townland of DEERPARK, which is adjacent to the demesne of Castle Forbes, on the north side. There were no Andersons there - and indeed Anderson is rare in Longford - only 6 listings , and all on the eastern side of the county. then in the Griffiths Valuation, there are three references to Thomas Mallon in Cloonellan Townland. It would be almost due west of Longford Town. There are no Andersons at all in Clongesh. A Margaret at Ballymahon, a couple in Longford Town. Still a rare name.
The Catholic Register in Newtownforbes does exist from 1829. Don't know where you are, but the Mormon Microfilm is #1279219 - it covers 1829 to 1881.

Except for possible Newspaper articles, that is about all I can think of.

The net has widened to seek Donnelly  James married Bridget McMan(n)us in 29.10.1861 Longford....any lead

James Keenan married Mary Green-child Maria  who moved to Lanarkshire....Longford

I am struggling to find a good link to search for Irish information on the net... a page  like scotland people ...Ancestry isnt all that good I find.

What do you advise?

since the marriage you are searching for is before the start of full civil registration you need to know which parish it took place in, so you can check what records may be available.

I assume the family were RC ?

Ancestry has very  few Irish records, and no Irish Civil or parish records.

the religion makes a big difference, as the parishes, locations and availability of records are different.

RC records are on microfilm in the National Library in Dublin
Church of Ireland records are in the Representative Church Body Library in Rathfarnham.

Some records for Co. Longford are available on a pay-website run by the Irish Family History Foundation at www.rootsireland.ie  But check they have the parishes and the dates you need, as not all parishes have old records.

...

religion matters most in the search for these two marriages... since non-Catholic marriages were registered from 1845.
