SCOTT family in Canonbie
« on: Wednesday 06 August 14 12:25 BST (UK) »
I have been looking at the 1871 Census for George Scott, Blacksmith at Hollows. Among those living there were three grandchildren, Mary Scott 10, William Scott 14, Ann Scott 6. All of them were born in Canonbie according to the census. I have been unable to access any records for their birth on either Ancestry or Scotlands People. If anyone can give me any help or any ideas I would be most grateful.

1861 shows William 4 and Margaret 3 with grandfather George

Perhaps checking for their marriages may be better

Hi,

A common reason children were with their grandparents is that they were illegitimate and the mother was working away somewhere else, or sometimes had subsequently married.

Mothers of illegitimate children could take the father to court to pay for the upkeep of the child. Records of this process are being indexed and I believe this is the record for Ann: http://www.scottishindexes.co.uk/courttranscript.aspx?courtid=62012010

FamilySearch has indexed most Scottish births (civil registration not baptisms) from 1855 to 1875. Here is an entry for Annie Monro Scott, born 1864: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XYPF-W66

Hope this helps,

Emma

      Nodrogw,
There is a very nice article which you might care to read.     If you google: "Doddlebug by Michael Wessier" it will be top of the list that comes up.      ...It is about the author, as a young boy, being evacuated from London during the blitz and visiting his Aunty Janie at Hollowshillgate during the war.    I think it is a very atmospheric story, which describes in detail everything he saw at that time.

The author was obviously very impressed by Hollowshillgate, and I think it might be interesting to you read what he has to say about it.

The author's second name is Wessier - (that is an i, 3rd letter from the end).
