Ann Brown
« on: Sunday 27 November 11 16:03 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if any member has any information on this lady.

She married Benjamin Hounsell 16 July 1820 in Wyke Regis. On the marriage certificate the name Joseph Brown appears but whether this was her father, brother, or other relative isn't clear. Her place of birth is unknown which makes tracking her family back further difficult.  She doesn't appear in the baptism records for Wyke Regis.

I've scanned the OPC and Ancestry records. Can any kind person suggest a way to proceed from here.

Thanks

She appears in the 41 and 51 censuses, but not after. There are two possible death dates, Dec 1853 and Dec 1857, both in Bridport where she lived with Benjamin.

Ann's birth place is given as Shilverton

Thank you, I don't know how I missed that.  Now to sort out where that place was.

I've never heard of Shilverton, Bridport. Possible mistranscription of Shipton (as in Shipton Gorge)??

I'm wondering if it could be Allington, part of Bridport.

Now I've taken the trouble to look more carefully at the baptism record it clearly indicates that it took place at St Mary's, Bridport, the main church in South Street.

There was a church in Allington in 1802 (though the present St Swithuns is an 1820s structure), so it would seem a bit unusual for the baptism not to have taken place there if that was the registered place of birth - there were plenty of other baptisms there in 1802! That said, the 1841 census has Benjamin and her living in Allington.

The transcription of the 1851 census I just looked at showed Chilverton rather than Shilverton, but I'm still none the wiser!

I have been racking my brains where Shilverton could be .It could easily have been mis-transcribed but I have found someome  else with Shilverton as birth place. ???  A John Walden. I know it does not tell us where  it was but does it mean it did exist?
