Researching the life and printing business of Ring Hurd (c. 1792-1873), Printer, Shaftesbury, Dorset.  Cannot find him in 1851 census (but he appears in 1861 and 1871).  He married Patience Rogers in 1814 but she died in 1844.  He subsequently married Martha...but Martha WHO? in 1846.   Can anyone help identify Martha?   And where were the couple in 1851?

Second query...I think that Ring Hurd was bound apprentice (presumably printer's apprentice) but I have no details.

No.  The London Martha is not the lady in question...I've checked that.  The 1846 Shaftesbury marriage is definitely the one - unless, of course, Ring Hurd was a bit of a serial husband.  I guess that I'll have to spend money in finding Martha's surname!

Thanks, anyway.

Here is that 1849 marriage - it looks good to me!

4 July 1849
St Dunstans West
Ring Hurd full age, widower, bookseller, of Shaftesbury in county of Dorsetshire, father Philip Hurd deceased
To
Martha Miller full age, spinster of Fetter Lane father James Miller deceased

Witnesses Henry Martin Wilmott and Harriott Hurd

Martha is on 1851 census in Dorset. Stated to be married but Ring not with her. Born Kelvedon, Essex.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Thought it must be, as he seems to be the only guy around with that name!

But Martha outlived him - she is executor according to entry in Probate index for him.

Yes.  Got that.  She died, aged 89, in 1898.  It was her maiden name that I was after - helps in pinpointing her birthplace (it's given as Kelverden in Essex but I couldn't work out who she was without the surname).

What's as useful is the appearance in your details of Philip and Harriet: now I can tre-assemble the family.

My chiefest concern is to look at Hurd's printing business - specifically, broadside ballads - but no real attempt has yet been made to look at his life and the one goes with the other, obviously (printing dates).

Again - thanks.
