Henry Row(e) b. Axminster c.1831
« on: Thursday 20 February 14 20:03 GMT (UK) »
Hello
I'm looking for a baptism for a Henry Rowe, b. Axminster c.1831. His parents were John and Sarah Rowe, and he had six siblings, all of whom were baptised at Chardstock. There is more information on this family on this thread:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=649853.msg4964413#msg4964413
I have only just found out that John and Sarah had another child, Henry, because I have been contacted by one of his descendents, but neither of us has been able to find his baptism. I have also been unable to find anything else about John Rowe, and so can't trace this particular family any further back, although my instinct tells me that they are in some way associated with other older Row(e)s in Chardstock.
Thanks

Minor point but is Axminster not in Devon ?

Do you have a middle name to assist the search? With all the various spellings of Row(e), Roe etc. another name would greatly help.

Richard

Hi Richard
Unfortunately I don't have a middle name for Henry. His siblings are variously recorded as Rowe or Row in the baptism records, but never Roe.
The reason I've put this on the Dorset board is because Henry's parents and siblings are all associated with Chardstock, which at this time was in Dorset, although the administrative district is Axminster. I've found all the baptisms except Henry's in Chardstock Parish records. The birthplace of Axminster and birth year of 1831 for Henry comes from the 1881 Census.

I'm sure it's him on the 1841 Census, so he's in Chardstock with his parents. It says that he wasn't born in the county (Dorset?), so I'm wondering if he was born somewhere in the Devon part of Axminster District, and was baptised there, or not baptised at all?
Had a look at the Chardstock Parish records on Chardstock Web Museum, and unfortunately there is a burial of a John Rowe, son of William and Dinah, 16 Feb 1800, which I think is the same John Row baptised 1799. Will investigate further later! (Got to go out now)
