Esther McDougall Buchanan, aged 27, a domestic servant, spinster, married David Morton, Springburn, Glasgow on 27 June 1924.

Her parents, Robert Buchanan, iron turner and Elisha m.s. Bryan,  are recorded as both deceased.

Obviously she believed this.

I'm not having much joy with The Highland Orphanage, Inverness. it opened in 1882 and was designed by the Architect Ross but that's all I'm getting.

Other hits seem to lead to this thread.  ::) ::) ::)

Unfortunately, I'm not in the Highlands at the moment so can't use my local info  :(

It seems that they must have been removed from Glasgow at some stage in the 1890s - Esther after 1897 - and then boarded out with the MacIntoshes.

It's at times like these that we need Runner (Russell)   :-\

The best that I can offer you for details of the Highland Orphanage and any records is to approach The Highland Council:

http://www.highland.gov.uk/

There are a number of contact points on this website.

meanwhile, I'll continue looking for info on your family  :)

I might have found Robert and his parents on the 1891 in Glasgow, Barony:

114 Canning Street, Glasgow
District 644/7 ED68 Household NO 23

Robert Buchanan, 27, gear cutter, b. Glasgow
Elisabeth, 24, b. Ireland (Letitia - Elisha - Elisabeth -also Bryan/O'Brien as m.s)
Robert, 10 mths, b. Glasgow (Census in April 1891, he born June 1890)

Parents' ages about right according to their marriage cert.

Hi there

The Highland Orphanage was located in Culduthel Road, Inverness until the late 1940s/50s. Not sure when it was established in Culduthel Road, but it was certainly in this location in 1911 according to Slater's Directory as listed on Am Baile.

I'll have a check through a few books I have and see if I can find any further mentions.

Hope this helps!

The online info state it was founded in 1882 - see my previous  messages #10 and #11  :)

It would appear that the three Buchanan children were boarded out at Kiltarlity though, so they might not have been in the Orphanage for long.

The records must be at the Highland Council somewhere.

I've already put up that link.

Hi,

I found this interesting wee snippet online

http://www.codexgeo.co.uk/dsa/building_full.php?id=M016038

I also have some books at home which I'll have a look for after work and try and find some reference. I live in Inverness and know Culduthel Road quite well but I just can't think which building would have been the orphanage.....then again the way the Council destroy all the good things here it could well have been bulldozed years ago.

I've looked in the books about Inverness that I have but there is no real mention of the Highland Orphanage. There could well be in James Miller's book "Inverness" but I would have to read through the whole book again but I'm too busy tracing my family tree to read right now.  ;D

I have found a great piece of film on the Scottish Screen Archive website, it is dated 1952, this is the description - Entrance to Mario's [in Inverness?] Man emerges carrying giant chocolate Easter egg, gets into his car. tracking shots from car through streets to the Highland Orphanage. Man delivers the egg to children at the door; ints Orphanage I see there is a question mark after Inverness but I can confirm this is definitely Inverness. Here's the link.
