Darbyshire, Penryn & Stringer in Shropshire County
« on: Tuesday 14 October 14 20:18 BST (UK) »
Hi

Can anyone help me with the following (I have tried tracing on Ancestry, FindMyPast and Family Search with no success   ???

John Penryn - I am looking for birthdate and parents, (and, not being greedy, any other information that may be known)

Known Facts. Appears to have been buried whilst at Workhouse. Oswestry Parish, St Asaphs Diocese 5/1/1788. Married 23/10/1763 at Market Drayton.

Elizabeth Darbyshire - wife of John Penryn - I think her father was Edward Darbyshire and her mother was Rebecca Stringer, (I believe her parents married 6/2/1736 at Drayton in Hales, and her date of Baptism was 22/11/1737). However I cannot find any details of the births for her parents.

Many thanks for reading this post

Cheers

Eric

Do you know where their children were born ??
an example - is this one of their children in Whitchurch ,Shrops
William Penryn
bapt 28th May 1775
Whitchurch
parents John Penryn and Elizabeth
did they have 7 children ? John the first born in Market Drayton - the other 6 in Whitchurch ?
................................................
marriage record has Penrhyn with an H and Elisabeth with an S
John Penrhyn to Elisabeth Darbyshire 23rd October 1763 Market Drayton ...
burial also has Penrhyn
can I ask what makes you think that John Penryn was born in Shropshire ??
John Penrhyn
bap 12th april 1737
Llandrinio
Montgomeryshire
Wales
the only baptism showing 1720 - 1750 on familysearch.org
this would make him 26 at the marriage and 51 at death ....could he have been born in Wales or is it definitely Shropshire ??

Market Drayton - where they married - to Llandrinio is 40 miles by road today - looks about 30 miles across land - not far - especially if John was a Farmer ??
Oswestry - where John Penryn died is only 8 miles from Llandrinio where that baptism is in 1737
I just wonder if he may have been born Wales ??

Re. the 23/10/1763 marriage -
(1) John's occpn is "Sadler" (2) witnesses Edwd Rogers, Francis Dawes (3) both signed rather than made mark

Re. the 12 April 1737 baptism, parents are "Will. & Sarah".

Sadly, age at death not recorded against the 5th Jan 1788 burial

Hi Guys

Thanks for your help with this.

May I ask your views with the 'suspects' you have given me?

I do not know if John Penrhyn was born in Shropshire so believe that Garstonite's suggestion of the Welsh Penrhyn, (given more credence as there appears to be no other Penrhyn with birth records in the vicinity during the period), gets my vote, unless someone else posts to throw doubt on this.

Having said that I do want to ask this. Hanes Teulu details a marriage in 1837 and the groom John Penryhn's occupation as a Saddler. Alberbury also states a burial of a John Penrhyn  in 5/1/1788 at Oswestry. I have looked and for some reason in my original post I said  John P died in the workhouse. This is clearly wrong as by the burial entry he was actually Governor of the Workhouse.

My questions are

1) Do you think a Saddler would rise to the position of Governor of a workhouse?
2) I cannot see a workhouse in Oswestry before 1792 so was there another within easy reach, (or maybe John worked out of the area)

I guess i can  contact the Shopshire Family History Society about this but thought I would run the question past you all first.

Once again many thanks, it is much appreciated

Cheers

Eric

Penrhyn children born to Willam and Sarah, Llandrinio, Montgomeryshire - John's siblings?

Sarah, bap 5 Jul 1741; Anne, bap 12 Feb 1744; William, Jun 8 1746; Susan, 24 March 1750

Have you checked on-line wills at the University of Wales?
cat.llgc.org.uk/cgi-bin/gw/chameleon

Think there's something there for William Penrhyn (haven't checked it out)

The MI for John Penrhyn at Oswestry would be very helpful. Need his age at the burial, to prove the date for the baptism at Llandrinio.

garstonite find in Llandrinio looks good.

It could be that this Penryn family is local Gentry.
