Corbetts
« on: Sunday 12 February 12 11:27 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace my family of Corbetts back to Nenagh in Tipperary.  It is quite difficult as they are mostly named William Corbett!  My grandfather is William Henry Corbett born 1896 in St Pancras London, his father was also William Corbett born 1871 in Nenagh Tipperary, and there I get a little stuck as there seem to be a lot of William Corbetts born around the same time.  I believe they lived in Spout Street, from information given but not confirmed.  Have you any information that can help me?

Linda

Welcome to Rootschat  :D

Are William Henry's parents, William and Louisa Annie (Johnson).

If so, according to marriage certificate, William's father is also William  ::) but he is a shoemaker which may help to trace him.

regards

There is this family in 1891:

4 Clarendon Street St Pancras

William Corbett head 45 yrs Shoemaker b Limerick
Elizabeth wife 32 yrs b London St Pancras
William 19 yrs Brass founder b Limerick

The occupations fit for father and son but now we are in Limerick. Also looks to be a second marriage for dad.

This family has other children. Elizabeth Urling and William Corbett married in 1884- you would get his father's name from the marriage certificate.

1881 has a William, Bootmaker who is a widower but no sign of young William.

On a published tree, William snr's wife is named as Mary Condon

Family Search has this marriage: Condon/Corbett

so you still have a William - is that what you meant? Do you have all this information?

Thanks for the very quick reply!  I did know some of this but wasnt sure I had it correctly linked up, probably because of the 2nd marriage.  You have helped clarify that for me.  Yes we do still have a William Corbett, seems we cant have a generation without at least one!  I am now trying to find William Corbett born 1844, but this seems not to have been in Nenagh.  How far back is it possible to go with Irish ancestors?  I started at the other end of the chain as it where and had my brother DNA tested, his results proved we were Irish back to the bone, so at least I know I am not barking up the wrong tree as far as area is concerned.  Many thanks for the help.
Linda

The Condon/Corbett marriage is 1869 Nenagh Vol 3 pg 569

You already have the fathers' names but it might give a townland for William.

Do you also have the birth of Bridget Corbett 1869 to William and Mary (Condon)- from Family Search?

There is a death for a Mary Corbett in 1876, Pancras aged 30 years - I wonder if that is her?

No I hadnt found Bridget.  Mary died quite young as William Corbett remarried an Elizabeth Urling in London.  I thought Mary Condon wouldnt be that common a name or Elizabeth Urling but they both are, this geneology is tricky!
