George Hobson lookup please!
« on: Friday 27 February 09 20:39 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
Can anyone help or advise please?
George Hobson, born at the Windmill Hills, Gateshead.  Reputedly on 20-06-1825.  As this birth is before  1837 how and where do I find out if this is his birthday and where exactly he was born, what were the names of his parents and how many siblings? His father was a grinder at one of the mills. George was sent to his grandfather at Harperley mills, Kyo near Catchgate at an early age because his mother, " ... taking a fever, I had to be taken out of the way." ( George's own words. ) His grandfather wouldn't part with him thereafter, and he stayed at Harpeley for the rest of his life. He died in 1905. He had brother called Michael, but were there any children?
Can anyone can throw any light on the subject as I don't know what to do next.

Go to this site http://www.rootschat.com/links/05pr/
Select Durham, and then Gateshead 1823 - 1832.
In the box at the bottom of the page enter 104 and press go.
On the page that comes up you will see what looks suspiciously like george's Baptism.

George, son of Michael and Margaret Hobson of Windmill Hills. Father's occupation miller. Baptised 17th July 1825.

If you browse through the pages you may find other siblings.

Hi Jennet,

It's not looking as if I found the right Michael Hobson in 1851/1841 census, so will have another look!

There is this burial at St. Mary's Church, Whickham, Gateshead
1819 Margaret Hobson late Robinson, age: 90, widow of Michael Hobson

and this marriage:
St. Mary   Whickham, Gateshead
1751 Michael Hobson married Margaret Robinson

Looks much too old to be George's grandmother, so maybe his gtgrandmother, and maybe that's why he named his son George Robinson Hobson, after her maiden name?

Welcome to Rootschat, by the way!

Thank you Jennifer - That looks extremely promising! I will certainly have a look at the site - think i need to download an update first, though.
And thank you too, Barbara, The Kyo entries are definitely George - with wife and all his offspring by 1871.  I have seen the 1881 census - Ann has died and George has remarried - and his father must have died too.
I had thought George's mother was a Robinson - but the 1819 burial is too early, he was born 1825 and so how could she be a Robinson? - Ahhh, more questions!
Thank you both so much for all the information - I need to ponder!
Jennet.

Margaret Robinson married Michael Hobson on 13th Nov 1751 in Wickham, Durham – so this is the Margaret you are referring to who died in 1819. It was their grandson, also a Michael Hobson who was the father of George Hobson.

George's wife Ann died in 1875 and George remarried in 1877. George's father Michael died on 21 Jan 1877 and was buried on 24 Jan 1877
Quote
burial St. John's  Seaham Harbour
24 Jan 1877 Michael Hobson, of Harperley Mills, Kyo, age: 85
