Mary jane Wilson (Married to James Lynes)
« on: Saturday 18 October 14 22:54 BST (UK) »
Hi All

My 3rd GGM Mary Jane Wilson was born around 1821 in Ireland (Taken from the 1881 census in Scotland). She was 60 in the Census and was living in Glasgow with her son-in-Law Andrew Wall (I think the name is correct).

How would I go about finding information regarding Irish briths, Marriages and Deaths.

I am not sure but I have a feeling that at some tim the family name might have changed from Lynas to Lynes. Just a feeling.

Regards

Iain

Civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864 (as did Catholic marriages, from 1845 for non-Catholic marriages).

Were any of Mary Jane's children born in Scotland? if so,. their birth certificate might list date and place of parents' marriage which might give you enough clues to start searching for Irish church records (you'll need a location- parish if not actual townland- as well as family's religion to see what might be available).

Hi,
I can find two marriages which come close to fitting your description.
29 Oct 1848 John LYNESS married Mary Jane Wilson in Shankill Church of Ireland, Lurgan.
26 Aug 1850 John LYNAS married Mary Jane Wilson in Lisburn Cathedral Church of Ireland.

Thanks to you both for that info. I will do a bit of digging based on your replies and see what I can extra evidence I can come up with.

If a child was born in Scotland then their birth certificate might confirm or rule out the 2 Irish marriages that kingskerswell found.

All

Thanks for your contributions so far. Getting to think that my ancestors were all hiding from the police  ;)

I have reviewed my data and this is what I have.

1. My GGF Douglas Gordon Wilson married
Mary Ann Lynes B 36/06/1884, (Possibly 10 Gairbraid street, Glasgow)
Her Address at the time of marriage was 03 Carrickardon street, Maryhill , Glasgow
on 23/12/1902 at 14 Robertson Street, Partick, Glasgow. (In the Church Of Scotland)
George Caldwell Wilson was a witness at the marriage
(They named one of their sons George Caldwell Wilson)

2. Mary Ann Lynes parents were (From Mary Anne's marriage certificate)

James Lynes, Aged 21 at his marriage,
A Stow ???? Moulder (Jouneyman) Deceased at the time of his daughter's wedding-
hard to read the first word - Married
Isabella Thomson Age 19 (A power loom worked)
At 70 Buccleuch Street, Glasgow (in the Free Church) on 28/10/1870.
                          Hugh Thomson was a witness.
This makes James Lynes birth about 1848/1849.
James's parents were given and James Lynes (It could be Lynas) and Mary Jane wilson.

From the family search site I can find 2 children

daughter Isabella Lynas 20/12/1871, Milton, Glasgow
Son         John Lynas 22/07/1873, Milton, Glasgow

I cannot find a birth from James Lynes (or any variant of Lynes) in Scotland in the appropriate
period of 1847 - 1850 based on his age at marriage.

The 1871 census has James and his wife Isabella living with her parents age 22. Based on his age
at marriage (Age 21) on 28/10/1870 and his age (Age 22) at the census on 02/04/1871 his birthday
is between those dates. So that makes his birth between October 1848 and April 1849. It gives his
place of birth as Glasgow. Just twigged that hi sprofession might have been an Iron Moulder. His
father-in-law was one as well.

On the 1882 census it give James (age 33 - more likely - or 35) place of birth as Ireland. He is listed
as living in Maryhill, Glasgow with his wifeIsabella (age 30) and 4 children Isabella Age 9,
John Age 7, Jane Age 5, James Age 1

The address looks like 4 Gairbraid Street, Maryhill, Glasgow.

I cannot find a birth for James Lynes anywhere.

If I look at the post by KingsKerswell's

29 Oct 1848 John LYNESS married Mary Jane Wilson in Shankill Church of Ireland, Lurgan.
26 Aug 1850 John LYNAS married Mary Jane Wilson in Lisburn Cathedral Church of Ireland.

both dates sound plausible however James and Isabella's Marriage certificate list
James Lynes/Lyness/Lynas/Lynass) and Mary Jane Wilson as his parents. So that should rule
out both of the above.

Regards

Iain

"

If the names of parents are only found on James' death certificate then there's room for error as the informant may not have known the correct names (often happens).

Hi aghadowey

All the info I have is from Marriage certificates or census records in Scotland so I think (with the Marriage certificates anyway) there might be a level of accuracy

When 'marriage certificate' do you mean daughter's 1884 marriage? if so, her father James Lynes was listed as deceased.
