Finding places

Hi I'm new to this forum and researching my family tree.
I've already done some work tracing Nisbets in East Lothian and was looking for advice on the best way to go about locating various addresses from birth certs, censuses etc.

Welcome to RootsChat. 

I have to confess that I always start with a modern map to see if the address still exists e.g. Multimap or Streetmap.

The National Library of Scotland has some 19th century OS maps of some Scottish towns available online:

And there is the Old OS maps site:

http://www.old-maps.co.uk

which can also be useful.

Chapelhouse, Dirleton - may be near Congalton Mains, which is just to the north of East Fortune.  Coordinates on the old maps site: 353300, 681200 or even onStreetmap for the OS map.

The other one is more difficult - what date was that one?

In 1881, the enumerator recorded the various houses dwellings under the occupation of the occupant, so there are a number of "Ploughmans House,"  "Joiners House"and even an "Ag Lab"

You may need to look at the description of the enumeration district if the address came from a census.

The gazetteer on the Electicscotland site is generally well worth a look:-

However, on this occasion it doesn't seem to list either of the place names/locations you mention.

I looked at the old maps where Neil suggested and may have hit the jackpot, Just North of Congalton is a place called Chapel - which mar relate to the Chapelhouse I was looking for.

Just South of this on the East Coast Mainline is a place called BETONY, which could conceiveably be the Belamy farm I'm looking for.

I see that Nisbet is one of your surname interests Steve.

I've got all of my family lines back into the 17th/18th Century except my great grandmother's father, John Nisbet.
My great grandmother, Euphemia Nisbet, was born in Humbie 23/08/1839 to Agnes Shiels and John Nisbet, although they never married. Shortly afterwards (1842) Agnes married John Neilson at Pencaitland, and Euphemia was brought up by her grandparents, James Shiels and Euphemia Montieth.
Amongst the family papers, however, was a photograph of John Nisbet as an old man so I assume he kept in touch with his daughter and her family but I have not been able to trace him.
He could, I suppose, be from either East Lothian or Midlothian, or even Berwickshire (where Euphemia eventually got married having moved to Highlaws Farm near Eyemouth with her uncle, Frances Shiels) as I don't know where Agnes was working when she became pregnant. The photograph was certainly amongst the Eyemouth papers as were lots of photographs of her Neilson half brothers and sisters
Don't suppose you have come across anyone that fits the Bill during your searches?
