Looking for the birth of Fulwar John Colquitt Craven said to be in Jan 1849
« on: Tuesday 30 September 14 12:52 BST (UK) »
Fulwar John Colquitt Craven is said to be born in Jan 1849 however I have been spectacularly unsuccessful in locating any record for his birth.  Fulwar's parents were Goodwin Charles Colquitt & Georgiana Maria Craven.

He may have been Fulwar John Craven or Fulwar John Colquitt or Fulwar John Colquitt Craven ::)

Hi KGarrad

Thanks for that: I only recently changed his birthplace to Nottinghamshire because I located another record but I see it is consistently in Wiltshire for Census records.  Perhaps I should ask for the post to be changed to Wiltshire.  I had a look on Google maps and its nearly 4 hours apart in travel????

Birth registration wasn't compulsory at that time - in fact the onus was on the Registrar to find, and register births!

They were a wealthy family - so probably a private baptism?

The tricky part is working out where?! ;D

The Craven part of the name seems to have come from the maternal side.

Goodwin Charles Colquitt married Georgiana Maria Craven, Marylebone Parish Church, 17 June 1841. (Perhaps you already had that - have just re-read first post).

Can't easily see them in 1851 ???

So I assume it was compulsory to baptise ??? Yes they were wealthy and I had hoped to find him in the Peerage books but not yet!

No, it has never been compulsory to baptise.

The Cravens of Brockhampton were not peers but get plenty of mentions in gentrified contexts including here www.thepeerage.com/p2296.htm#i22955.  Georgiana's father Fulwar died in 1860 and it looks as though the Colquitt-Cravens moved into Brockhampton Park at that point. Georgiana's (three? four) brothers did not survive to inherit.
