Inverary - burial ground
« on: Tuesday 02 March 10 11:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Was wondering if anyone knows where I can find a lair layout plan/burial list for the burial ground of Kilmalieu, Invarary.

Death record records that body was taken from Glasgow to Invarary for burial (1860s) but having visited the cemetery, it has been impossible to find the headstone which I have been told was on the grave.

Any help gratefully received.

:)

 Hi Grey Seagull,
Several members of my Purdie - Greig - Mathie - Walls family from around Inverary were buried in Kilmalieu burial ground.
I was helped by a researcher in Inverary - can`t recall how I found her but could get in touch on your behalf if all else fails.
Let me know what you would like me to do.
                                                           Regards, Thommoje

Hi Thommoje,

I am looking for the grave of Agnes Rankin(e), m/s Anderson, spouse of Donald Rankin(e).  She died in Glasgow 28th January 1860, aged 74, though she was born and brought up in Inverary.

Many of the stones are in a bad state of repair or have fallen and been grown over by grass or the inscriptions have just faded.  To find the grave, I would need a map/diagram  with the names of other graves in the vacinity to help me ensure I have the correct lair.

It is a big ask, but if you are able to help, that would be great!

Did you manage to locate your graves?  If so, I would be happy to take photos of your graves if you don't already have them.

Regards,

Grey Seagull

 Hi Grey Seagull,
I will contact the researcher in Furnace and let you know what she can tell us.
As I live in Australia, I have not been able to visit Kilmalieu burial ground. Your offer to photograph any graves of my family members is wonderful - thank you , in anticipation of some success.
Family members known to be buried there are :-

  Catherine ( Morrison ) Buntain - died 15/4/ 1856 - aged 46 yrs

William Greig , Shoemaker died 4/7/1793 - aged 28 years - Stone erected by David Greig , Overseer in Glen Shira [ my GGG Grandfather]

Ann Walls died 24 October 1855  aged 75 /77 years

Robert Walls died 4/3/ 1828  aged 96 years
wife  Janet Mathie died 11/9/ 1825 aged 93

William Greig  ( 25 June 1785 - 17 Dec 1858)

Others who must be there:-

Alexander Purdie - died 1822 [ my GG Grandfather ]

 Janet ( Greig ) Purdie - wife of above - died 1851- 1854

 Robert Buntain - died 13 April 1887

Christine ( Greig ) Fogo 9/9/1787 - 28 Feb 1871

 Elizabeth ( Greig) Thom  6/2/ 1799 - 30/6/ 1884

 Grace / Grizel Greig 30/1/1804 - 30 /10/1889

Any Walls, Mathie , Greig , Purdie / Morrison / Buntain / Fogo or Thom inscriptions that can be read are likely to be my folk - as you can see my ties to Inverary and the Estate `s workforce are strong.

I gather you live nearby and this would not be difficult for you .
                                                                 Regards, Thommoje

Hi,
Live not too far away - couple of hours. But a trip there means the chance to visit a lovely restaurant en route. Probably won't be going till April. Will have a good look around for your headstones but, as I say, many are in poor condition. Do you have any specific locations?

Regards :)

 Hi Grey Seagull,
I have had a Reply from my contact in Furnace.
She has a list and plan for Kilmalieu burial ground. She has checked and there are no Rankins or Andersons.
She did find amongst her other records a John Anderson married to an Elizabeth Campbell who had a daughter Agnes. He was deceased by 1858 and was a Brewer.
There is another cemetery called Shira but it is relatively new.
Hope there is something of help,
                                                                             Regards, Thommoje

Hi Thimmoje,

My Agnes is the daughter of a John Anderson and an Unknown Campbell; presumably, the person who registered her death had forgotten the first name....  Although I was lead to believe that John was a maltman, ie working with whisky, there was not a distillary at Inverary: apparently they blended whisky brought to the Castle.

A brewer working with beer is a similar occupation, and possibly to an engineer (her husband & son) they might be the same thing.  I think too that I have found some evidence that my Agnes' mother was Elizabeth: second daughter is called Elizabeth.  I plan at some time in the future to contact Inverary Castle to ask if they have any records of John's employment: family lore does link the family with the Castle.

I have never seen it before, but information on the burial was written onto the death certificate.  The funeral was undertaken by Wylie & Lochhead - a large and well-known Glasgow firm, and having checked their records, can confirm she was buried at Kilmalieu.  It may be that your friend has a copy of IMs recorded fairly recently rather than the original burial records, and if this is the case, it may be that the headstone was damaged/broken/badly weathered by the time the IMs were recorded.  Oh well ::)

However, I think that this John and Elizabeth are probably the correct family, therefore would be grateful to receive any information about them that he/she may have.  Also, if your contact in Furnace is able to provide a plan of the burial ground and info on the plots, it would make locating your relatives a lot easier.

Thanks for your help, and am looking forward to my trip to Inverary!
 :)  :)  :)
