Tarbet family Port Glasgow
« on: Sunday 10 August 14 21:12 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I'm tracing my Tarbet family line and I have drawn a blank already.  I have a James Tarbet married to Margaret Shaw on 16 OCT 1819 in Port Glasgow.  She is the daughter of John Shaw and Mary McComb (Malcolm) and was born 17/11/1786 in Greenock.  I cannot find a birth record or death record for James therefore unable to trace his parents.  Any information would be great.
Regards Rosiered

Rosie, try the online archive of the Greenock Telegraph at the Watt Library.

The 1841 census shows the family at Princes Street, Port Glasgow. They are called "Tarbert":

Margaret Tarbert, "45", Independent, born England
Robert Tarbert, 14, sailmaker's apprentice, born Renfrewshire
John Tarbert, 8, born Renfrewshire
Robert Williams, "55", mariner, born England

They 1851 census shows them at Wood Lane, Port Glasgow. They are called "Tarbet":

Margaret Tarbet, head, widow, 56, born England
John Tarbet, son, 18, draper's apprentice, born Port Glasgow
James Tarbet, grandson, 1, born Port Glasgow
also two lodgers.

Is this the correct family?

Familysearch shows James Tarbe(r)t and Margaret Shaw having two children:

James, b. 1-12-1821, bpt. 7-12-1821, Port Glasgow
John Livingston b. 8-11-1823, bpt. 16-11-1823, Port Glasgow

That ties in with the age of John in the 1841/51 censuses above.

There is also a couple in Port Glasgow which must be related (perhaps Robert is a brother of James):

Robert Tarbe(r)t and Margaret Mcaulay, who had the following children:

John, b. 14-2-1823, bpt. 14-2-1823
Margaret Shaw, b. 7-10-1834, bpt. 12-10-1834
James, b. 23-11-1836, bpt. 4-12-1836

Thanks for the replies.  My Margaret Shaw Tarbet was born in Greenock Scotland so although the ages and names of children match I think it must be another family.   :-\
Skoosh, I've tried the Greenock Telegraph at the Watt Library and found lots of information about the later generations but nothing about this particular James Tarbet's birth.  I do have their marriage certificate but it doesn't shed any light on his birth.  I will keep digging. Thanks again

As you say, everything fits with the family in the censuses posted above. How do you know your Margaret Shaw was born in Greenock?

I've found her birth certificate on scotlandspeople and it shows she was born in Greenock.  Her mothers maiden name changes from Malcolm on Margaret's birth certificate to McComb on her marriage certificate but it is the same person.  she had two sisters called Mary and Agnes and mums maiden name for them is McComb.  The birth is also registered on familysearch.org

The marriage of James Tarbe(r)t and Margaret Shaw is recorded at Port Glasgow on 18th September 1819, as you know. Does the original of that entry actually give her mother's name?

Also, have you found a statutory death certificate for her post 1854?
