Young, Drysdale, Archibald in Gourock / Greenock - please help
« on: Saturday 18 October 14 23:50 BST (UK) »
Agnes Angus Archibald Young was my great grandmother. According to family sources she was born in Greenock (or Gourock) on 4 Apr 1889 to John Young and Agnes Drysdale Archibald. She later moved to South Africa and married John Christie in 1909.

I'm interested in tracking down further information on her parents and beyond. Apparently their is a connection to the Drysdales who changed their name from Douglas following a dispute with a neighbour who was friends with the King!

Any hints or connections would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance

Colin,  Drysdale is from Dryfesdale, the Dryfe is a river in Dumfries-shire. Black's "Surnames of Scotland", mentions that the Drysdale's in west Fife are descended from the Douglas's of Brushwood Haugh who had a run-in with Johnstone of Greenstonehill over a mill. The Douglas's, eight in all, attacked the invading Johnstone's killing fourteen of their twenty along with their "base" leader on Monday 16th May 1503 and as a result had to vamoose, four days later, to a lonely valley on the Devon in the Ochill Hills, as the posse' was in pursuit, where they later purchased a farm called the Haugh of Dollar and changed their name from Douglas to that of their native parish, Dryfesdale (Drysdale). The johnstone's having taken posession of Brushwood Haugh.
A nice wee tale this, it would be in the reign of James IV, who passed by their their sequestered refuge in 1506, en-route from Stirling to Falkland and dined on Haliday's green,  a neighbour to the east. The Drysdale's were thankfully not recognised, probably under the bed or you mebbes wouldn't be posting this query.  ;D

Best Wishes,

Skoosh.

Hi Colin

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

There are no births showing for an Agnes Young in Renfrewshire in 1889, however, there is an 1889 birth showing on the index which I have searched as agnes ang* arc* Young (* is a wildcard for spelling variations etc.).

This shows in Glasgow, not Renfrewshire where Greenock and Gourock are. You can view this image online on the pay to view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  The birth cert should include details on place and date of parents marriage to let you work back to the next generation.

ADDED: You always bring these stories to life Skoosh with so much colour and description  ;D A further similar post also here www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=676961.new;topicseen#new

Just from general searches on the birth index, the entry showing for a possible birth entry in 1889 for Agnes was in the Govan area of Glasgow. There is 1891 census entry as a possibility:

Agnes Young 40 b. Dollar, Clerkmannanshire
John Young 17
William Young 13
David Young 71 (mis trascribed age)
Robert Young 8
James Young 6
Agnes Young 2
John Young 81 father (in law?) Retired Captain b. Alloa, Clackmannanshire
Maggie Finnie 25 servant

Address: 2 Royal Terr Drive Road, Glasgow Govan

And then from 1881:

Agnes Young 31 b. Dollar, Clackmanan
John Young 7
William Young 3
David Young 1
Francis Young 7 Months
Janet Dykes 13

Address: No- 2 Camden Place Govan Road, Govan

Young Agnes' birth details will confirm details properly, Colin. The census entries above are just speculative for now.

Also, are you certain that Agnes' father was John? Could he be William?

There is this marriage showing in 1872 in Govan https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTBJ-VYS

I thought also this birth for a John in 1874, which fits with census entries we have in 1881 & 1891 might be the correct one. Father also shows as William Young https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQP6-LF7

Maybe the reference to Greenock came from the 1901 census?:

Mrs Agnes Young 49 b. Clackmananshire
David Young 21 Joiner's App b. Glasgow
Robert Young 18 Boilermaker's App b. Glasgow
James Young 16 Junior Clerk b. Glasgow
Agnes Young 11 b. Glasgow

Address: Wellington St 9, Greenock East

Your Agnes at least must have left for SA between 1901 and her marriage in Oct 1909 from what you have.

I can't easily see a death entry on SP www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for mother Agnes after 1901. It is normally easier to search for married women's deaths on SP as you can search with both married and maiden surnames.

Just throwing these in because of the names, locations, South Africa connection, etc.:

David, 3rd son of William & Agnes Young, Gourock, formerly of Greenock, died at Cloverfield Gold Mine, South Africa on 19th July 1905 age 25. (Greenock Telegraph 14.08.1905)

William, son of William Young, died at 54 Wellington Street, Greenock on 17th December 1880 age 21 ½ months. (Greenock Telegraph 18.12.1880).

Just google 'greenock telegraph intimations & young' for other newspaper notices for Youngs or use this link-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

That looks really promising, Aghadowey  :)

The only curious one is the William aged 2 and 6 months when he died in 1880...given we have a 3 yr old William in 1881 and then a 13 yr old William with Agnes too in 1891. Curious. Hopefully all will be revealed with more records.

Firstly a belated thank you to everyone for your help!  This really gives some useful information to take forward.

Further research within the family confirms that Anges' father was indeed William.

Some additional information that a cousin sent me:
"Agnes was one of the first women car owners and drivers in JHB and she knew all about her car. She was Mayoress of Johannesburg in 1921. Agnes married John Christie on 20th October 1909 in Johannesburg. They had a house in Mayfair called Ochil House. They has Maud, Gordon who died aged three months, Ethel and Rona [my grandmother].
Agnes' father was William Young who married Agnes Drysdale Archibald in Greenock, a seaside town north north west of Glasgow. He was a ship's engineer working for the Clyde Shipping Line. They had four sons, John, Robert, William and David and then Agnes and another little girl who died.
Agnes died a very painful death from Cancer of the womb in early December 1946 "
